Monster Ramen

3435 W Fullerton Ave, Chicago, IL 60647, USA

4.0
Been following on instagram and wanted to try. Finally visited today (Saturday) around 2:30pm and only one other table was taken. If you are familiar with Japanese ramen then you know chasu is pork. However, this restaurant owner wanted to be little different. Their chasu is Wagyu beef. If you think pork chasu is too fatty then this place is a must. Rich flavors and their egg is perfectly cooked. Don’t be fooled by the size of the bowl for shoyu plus ramen. I was worried that it was not enough but didn’t realize the bowl was deep. It was plenty enough. Also, some had mentioned that the broth was too salty to finish. If you are aware of Japanese Ramen, then you should know that broth is not to meant to be finished. It’s just to add flavors to the ramen. We ordered beef gyoza which had good meaty taste and their egg cucumber salad was a must for me. Will need to visit again soon. - SY G

Features / Highlights

Monster Ramen in Chicago stands out for several unique features and highlights that distinguish it in the city's competitive ramen landscape. Here are some of its most notable attributes:

  • Signature Wagyu Beef Chashu: A defining feature, Monster Ramen replaces traditional pork chashu with thinly sliced Wagyu beef. This offers a less fatty alternative that is rich in flavor and tender, appealing to those who find pork chashu too rich or simply prefer beef.
  • Rich and Flavorful Broths: Customers consistently praise the "rich flavors" and "depth and flavor" of the ramen broths, whether it's their beef-based Gyukotsu or chicken-based Tori chintan. The broth is designed to infuse the noodles and toppings with delicious taste.
  • Homemade, Fresh, and Thin Noodles: Monster Ramen boasts an in-house "NOODLE LAB" where they craft their own fresh noodles using an imported machine. These noodles are described as "fresh and very thin," which contributes significantly to the overall texture and quality of the ramen bowl.
  • Perfectly Cooked Ramen Egg (Ajitama): The ramen egg (Ajitama) is noted as "perfectly cooked," a hallmark of a high-quality ramen establishment, indicating attention to detail in every component.
  • Deceptively Generous Portions: Despite initial appearances, the bowls are "deep" and provide "plenty enough" food, offering a satisfying and filling meal.
  • Delicious Gyoza and Other Sides: The Beef Gyoza is highlighted for its "good meaty taste," and the "Loaded Gyoza" is frequently praised as "amazing" and melting in your mouth, featuring unique toppings like yuzu aioli and balsamic glaze. The "egg cucumber salad" (likely the Wakame Salad or similar) is also a popular "must for me."
  • Beef Jam and Rice Dishes (Gohan): The "beef jam and rice" (likely referring to their "Rice and Jam" or "Beef Chashu Don" bowls) is described as "amazing," offering a delicious alternative or accompaniment to the ramen.
  • Understanding of Japanese Ramen Culture: The restaurant demonstrates an understanding of traditional Japanese ramen etiquette, acknowledging that the broth is meant to add flavor to the ramen rather than be fully consumed, which can be helpful for diners.
  • High Standards of Quality: Being voted among the "best ramen places in the city" and among the "top 10 hottest restaurants in Chicago" within its first year speaks volumes about its quality and appeal.
Promotions or Special Offers

While Monster Ramen does not extensively advertise frequent, rotating discounts or typical happy hour deals in the provided public information, its unique offerings and pricing structure act as their own form of special value for locals. Here’s what can be highlighted:

  • Unique Wagyu Beef Specialization: The very essence of Monster Ramen, offering Wagyu beef chashu, is a "special" in itself. This premium ingredient, typically found at higher price points, is integrated into their core ramen offerings, providing an exceptional experience. While prices might be higher than a standard pork ramen, the value for the quality of Wagyu is notable.
  • Ramen Omakase Events: Periodically, Monster Ramen offers exclusive "Ramen Omakase" dining experiences. These special ticketed events, while not a discount, offer a curated and often multi-course tasting journey of their ramen artistry, providing a unique and exclusive opportunity for true ramen enthusiasts. These are limited and often sell out quickly.
  • Consistent High Quality: The "consistent great experience" and "some of the best ramen I’ve had in Chicago" from customer reviews suggest that the restaurant delivers consistent value through its high-quality ingredients and preparation, making every visit a worthwhile investment.
