Q Introduce
For those in California seeking an unparalleled and authentic sushi experience, Q in downtown Los Angeles stands as a testament to traditional Japanese culinary artistry. More than just a sushi restaurant, Q offers a refined Omakase dining experience, where the chef's expertise guides you through a meticulously crafted progression of dishes. This isn't your everyday sushi spot; it's a destination for connoisseurs and anyone looking to immerse themselves in the subtleties of Edo-style sushi, prepared with precision and a deep respect for tradition.
At Q, the philosophy centers on highlighting the natural flavors of the highest quality fish, often flown in fresh from Japan. The focus is on the delicate balance between perfectly seasoned sushi rice and exquisitely prepared seafood, presented in a thoughtful sequence. It's an intimate setting where every detail, from the temperature of the rice to the expert slicing of the fish, is considered part of the overarching culinary narrative. For Californians looking to delve into the nuanced world of high-end, traditional sushi, Q offers a journey that aims to transport diners straight to the heart of Tokyo's esteemed sushi counters.
Q is strategically located at 521 W 7th St, Los Angeles, CA 90014, USA, placing it firmly within the vibrant and ever-evolving downtown Los Angeles landscape. This central location makes it highly accessible for a wide array of diners across the greater Los Angeles area. Downtown LA is a hub for business, entertainment, and residential living, ensuring that Q is situated amidst a dynamic environment.
Getting to Q is relatively convenient. For those utilizing Los Angeles's public transportation, the restaurant is within easy walking distance of several Metro rail stations. The 7th Street/Metro Center station, a major transit hub serving multiple Metro lines (including the A, B, D, E, and J lines), is just a few blocks away. This makes it an ideal choice for a special occasion dinner without the typical L.A. parking woes, encouraging guests to experience the city's public transit system.
While street parking can be a challenge in downtown areas, there are numerous paid parking garages and lots within close proximity to Q. Patrons can often find secure parking options just a short walk from the restaurant. Additionally, ride-sharing services are readily available and widely used in the area, offering a convenient door-to-door solution. The downtown setting also provides opportunities to explore nearby attractions or enjoy a stroll before or after your exquisite meal at Q.
Q primarily focuses on providing a singular, high-end dining experience built around the tradition of Omakase. This specialized approach ensures a focused and authentic Japanese culinary journey for its guests.
Edomae-Style Omakase Dining: Q specializes exclusively in Omakase, meaning "chef's choice." There is no à la carte menu, allowing Chef Hiroyuki Naruke to present a curated and evolving tasting menu of the day's freshest and highest quality ingredients. This Edomae-style sushi emphasizes the natural flavors of the fish, with precise aging, curing, and seasoning techniques applied by the chef.
Lunch and Dinner Omakase Experiences: Q offers both lunch and dinner Omakase experiences. These structured meals typically begin with "tsumami" (small appetizers) followed by various sashimi and nigiri sushi courses. The offerings vary seasonally, ensuring a unique experience with each visit based on the freshest available selections.
Counter Seating: The dining setup at Q is intimate, featuring counter seating that allows guests to observe Chef Naruke's meticulous preparation of each dish. This direct interaction, or at least proximity to the culinary process, is an integral part of the traditional Omakase experience, fostering a connection between the diner and the art of sushi making.
Curated Beverage Selection: To complement the refined sushi, Q offers a carefully selected list of beverages, including premium sake and Japanese craft beers. The beverage selection is designed to enhance the flavors of the Omakase courses, with staff available to provide recommendations for perfect pairings.
Strict Reservation and Cancellation Policy: Given the exclusive nature and limited seating, Q operates with a strict reservation policy, often requiring a deposit. Cancellations or modifications typically need to be made at least 48 hours in advance to receive a deposit refund. This policy is in place to ensure the highest quality experience for all guests and manage the demand for their highly sought-after seats.
Q distinguishes itself from other sushi establishments in Los Angeles through several key features that contribute to its celebrated reputation:
Michelin Guide Recognition: Q has been recognized by the prestigious Michelin Guide, a testament to its commitment to exceptional quality, skillful preparation, and overall dining experience. This acknowledgment signals a consistently high standard of cuisine.
Chef Hiroyuki Naruke's Expertise: The restaurant is helmed by Chef Hiroyuki Naruke, who brings a wealth of experience from running a sushi bar in Tokyo. His traditional Edomae approach focuses on precise techniques for seasoning and preparing fish and rice, often considered as important as the fish itself. His dedication to authenticity is a significant draw for sushi aficionados.
Emphasis on Sushi Rice: A defining feature of Q is the chef's meticulous attention to the sushi rice. Unlike some establishments, Chef Naruke's rice is prepared with a precise balance of red vinegar (brewed from aged sake cakes) and sea salt, designed to complement and enhance the natural flavors of the fish without overpowering them. This focus on the rice is a hallmark of authentic Edomae sushi.
High-Quality Ingredients: Q is renowned for sourcing premium, fresh ingredients, with fish often flown in directly from Japan. This commitment to the highest quality produce is evident in every course, ensuring a superior taste and texture.
Intimate and Traditional Ambiance: The restaurant's design provides a serene, elegant, and intimate setting, mirroring the traditional sushi bars found in Japan. The focus on counter dining enhances the connection between the diners and the chef, contributing to a truly immersive cultural and culinary experience.
No Additional Gratuities Expected (Policy Change): While past reviews mention an automatic gratuity, current information from sources like Tock indicates that "No additional gratuities are expected." This suggests the Omakase price is inclusive of service, offering a transparent pricing structure for guests.
Given Q's highly specialized and exclusive Omakase-only model, traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the typical sense (like happy hour deals or discounts) are not a focus. The restaurant prioritizes a consistent, high-quality, and premium dining experience. Therefore, you are unlikely to find advertised discounts or promotional events in the way you might at a more casual restaurant.
However, the "special offer" from Q comes in the form of its curated Omakase experience itself:
Lunch Omakase Experience: While still a significant investment, the lunch Omakase, typically priced at $150 per guest, offers a slightly more accessible entry point to Chef Naruke's artistry compared to the dinner Omakase, which is often priced higher (around $300 per guest). This can be seen as a "special offer" for those wishing to experience Q at a relatively lower cost.
Seasonal & Unique Ingredients: The core "special offer" is the ever-changing nature of the Omakase menu, which features seasonal and often rare fish and ingredients not typically found elsewhere. Each visit promises a unique culinary journey, making the experience itself a form of exclusive offering.
For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing for both lunch and dinner Omakase, it is always recommended to check Q's official reservation platform (such as Tock) or contact the restaurant directly. Due to the high demand and exclusive nature of Q, booking well in advance is almost always necessary, regardless of any potential, unadvertised variations in their offerings.

For locals in California, particularly those residing in or frequently visiting Los Angeles, Q offers a unique and highly suitable dining experience that goes beyond a typical sushi meal. It caters to a specific desire for authenticity, quality, and a profound culinary journey, making it a compelling choice for various reasons.
Firstly, Q provides an unparalleled authentic Edo-style Omakase. In a diverse culinary landscape like California, finding a sushi restaurant that strictly adheres to traditional Japanese techniques, from the preparation of the rice to the curing of the fish, is a significant draw. For locals who are true sushi enthusiasts or those eager to expand their palate beyond conventional rolls, Q delivers a pure and unadulterated experience, often praised for its fresh, high-quality fish flown in from Japan. This commitment to tradition ensures a memorable and educational dining experience that differentiates it from more casual sushi spots.
Secondly, its location in downtown Los Angeles makes it accessible for a wide range of Angelenos. Whether coming from the surrounding neighborhoods for a special occasion or seeking a fine dining experience after work, the restaurant’s central position and proximity to public transit make it a convenient destination. While parking can sometimes be a consideration in downtown, the array of public transportation and rideshare options mitigate this, allowing locals to enjoy the evening without undue stress.
Moreover, Q is ideal for locals seeking a special occasion destination. The intimate setting, coupled with the chef's direct interaction (or at least presence) and the meticulously curated Omakase menu, transforms a dinner into an event. It’s a perfect choice for anniversaries, celebrations, or simply when you want to treat yourself to an elevated culinary adventure. The restaurant's reputation, solidified by its Michelin Guide recognition, further assures diners of a top-tier experience.
While some past reviews mention high prices and a very traditional, quiet dining atmosphere, it's crucial for locals to understand that Q offers a particular kind of sushi experience – one that prioritizes the purest form of Edomae sushi. It’s for those who value the subtlety of expertly prepared fish and rice over an extensive menu or a highly social setting. For discerning Californians who appreciate the artistry, precision, and high-quality ingredients inherent in true Japanese sushi, Q stands as a beacon of culinary excellence, offering an unforgettable and deeply satisfying meal right in the heart of their city.

Q Reviews
I came to Q with my girlfriend for our anniversary to experience high-quality sushi and a unique experience since I had found the restaurant on the Michelin guide. I spent almost $1,000 on a dinner for two and we both left hungry. The chef needs to add more dishes to the course! The sushi rice had way too much vinegar and was overpowering all the dishes.Although I believe the service was ok, not great. They add an automatic 20% gratuity charge which I did not believe was fair. Dinner Omakase was falsely advertised at $300 per person but with the added gratuity it was actually $360 plus tax per person. The dinner was very awkward since the chef wouldn't talk to anyone, he was just servicing the dishes, explaining what they were briefly, and after would retreat to preparing the next dish.Whoever gave this place a Michelin star was smoking crack that day.I definitely will not be returning and would rather take my business to a more casual sushi restaurant since at least there I can spend a fraction of what was charged and not leave hungry.
May 23, 2022 · Carlos “Shaggy” FavelaLike what Winnie in another review said, the service from this place is terrible. There was no water or tea offered by the waitress, and there was basically no interaction with the chef which is not what I'd expect from an omakase experience.Despite being seated at the sushi bar (and there being no one else in the restaurant), the chef made the sushi at the other end of the bar diagonal from us so we could barely see the sushi being made. He only ever came over to tell us the name of the fish with no other descriptions. The fish quality was good and definitely fresh, but I found that the rice was a little too vinegary which overwhelmed the fish (which is of course subjective). They added a 20% gratuity to the bill which is fine, but they also then taxed on top of the added gratuity instead of the gratuity being added afterwards. The worst part is that as we were leaving, the waitress chased after us and yelled after the chef who was unlocking the door to not let us leave yet because she thought we were 2 cents short on our $600+ bill, and when she recounted and realized we were actually 3 cents over, she never apologized or did anything else. For the price paid, the quality and service definitely does not match. I've had better omakase elsewhere for far cheaper. Overall, this might have been the worst fine dining experience I've had.I'm not sure how they got their Michelin star to be honest.
May 21, 2022 · NI will not come back here again, the service at this place is the dealbreaker 🙃 The waitress didn’t even offer water or tea, and she only said three sentences throughout the whole dining experience- “hi” “no video please” and “goodbye”. The chef was like a sushi robot too… He just made sushi, give it to us, and then he just started to play on the phone. Zero explanation of the ingredient except for the name. Not sure how they got the 1 star Michelin? The food itself was decent (maybe 4 stars), but we didn’t get emotionally engaged. The whole place was just so cold hearted lolWith this kind of service, they still added 20% service charge to the check? Definitely not recommending this place.
Aug 25, 2021 · Winnie HuangOne of the best Omakase experiences in LA! Quick, delicious, yummy and friendly. I’m picky about the food. I’ve been in Tokyo and can compare. You should try this spot guys! 5 stars!
Mar 15, 2025 · Nina FoleyAMAZING Omakase experience in DTLA. Very high-end; every piece of fish from Japan. One of my favorites so far in LA. The restaurant is designed beautifully, love the ceiling lighting and brick walls. As for the food, everything was fresh and super tasty. My favorites: Kingfish, Uni, Bluefin Tuna.
