- Dine-In Service: Enjoy your meal in Sagami's inviting and authentic Japanese ambiance. The restaurant provides a comfortable setting for both casual dining and special occasions.
- Specialty Dishes:
- Hitsumabushi: This highly celebrated dish, featuring eel on rice served with dashi (Japanese broth), is a major highlight. Reviewers consistently praise its authenticity, noting the eel sauce is "savory and mildly sweet the way it is in Japan, not syrupy and very sweet like in the US." This dish is a must-try for any unagi enthusiast.
- Bento Boxes: Sagami offers a "great with variety of choice!" selection of bento boxes, providing a well-rounded meal with multiple components. These are perfect for those who enjoy a bit of everything and are a popular choice for lunch or dinner.
- Appetizers: A selection of classic Japanese appetizers to start your meal, including:
- Agedashi Mochi: Fried mochi (rice cakes) with a delicate sauce, praised as "delicious" by customers.
- Various other traditional starters to complement your main dishes.
- Sushi and Sashimi: While not the primary focus, Sagami likely offers a selection of fresh sushi and sashimi to cater to diverse Japanese food preferences.
- Noodle Dishes: Including udon noodle soup. While one review suggested the noodles can be "a little over cooked and became too soft" on occasion, the overall food quality is highly regarded.
- Desserts: Traditional Japanese desserts to conclude your meal, such as the "matcha/mochi dessert set" which was described as "delicious."
- Impressive Sake List: For enthusiasts, Sagami boasts an "impressive" selection of sake, allowing diners to pair their authentic meal with a suitable traditional Japanese beverage.
- Takeout Service: For added convenience, Sagami offers takeout options, allowing customers to enjoy their authentic Japanese dishes at home.
Sagami distinguishes itself through several key features that contribute to its reputation as a go-to spot for authentic Japanese cuisine in Irvine:
- Exceptional Authenticity of Dishes: A recurring theme in customer reviews is the unparalleled authenticity of the food. Many describe it as "by far the best and most authentic Japanese food I've had outside of Japan." This commitment to traditional flavors and preparation methods is a significant draw for discerning diners.
- Star Dish: Hitsumabushi: The Hitsumabushi (eel on rice) is consistently highlighted as "by far the star" of the menu. Its authentically savory and mildly sweet eel sauce, made without high-fructose corn syrup (a critical detail for some diners), receives particular praise, setting it apart from many Americanized versions.
- High-Quality Ingredients and Preparation: Sagami's dedication to quality is evident in its dishes. From the perfectly prepared eel to the delicious agedashi mochi and dessert, the focus is on fresh ingredients and meticulous preparation.
- Diverse Menu with Bento Box Options: The menu offers a good "variety of choice," especially with its "great" bento boxes. This ensures there's something for everyone, whether they prefer a comprehensive meal with multiple components or specific à la carte dishes.
- Impressive Sake Selection: For those who enjoy pairing their Japanese meal with traditional beverages, Sagami's "impressive" sake list provides excellent options, enhancing the overall authentic dining experience.
- Dedicated to Flavor and Detail: The attention to detail, such as the authentic eel sauce and the quality of the agedashi, demonstrates Sagami's commitment to delivering a truly genuine Japanese taste.
- Positive Dining Experience: Despite a minor note about udon noodles, the overall customer feedback points to a "fantastic experience," suggesting a generally welcoming and satisfying environment.
While specific, regularly advertised promotions from Sagami are not explicitly detailed in the provided information, the restaurant's value proposition often lies in the quality and authenticity of its food, especially considering the unique dishes it offers. For a truly authentic Japanese dining experience, the pricing is generally seen as reasonable given the quality.
One inherent "special offer" is the consistently high praise for their signature dishes like Hitsumabushi, which, for a truly authentic preparation, offers exceptional value to those who appreciate genuine Japanese cuisine. For example, a customer's delight in finding unagi prepared without high-fructose corn syrup, enabling them to eat safely, highlights a unique value proposition for individuals with specific dietary needs.
As is common with many high-quality local restaurants, any special promotions might be communicated directly to loyal customers, through in-house signage, or via their social media channels if they have them. It's always a good practice for locals interested in potential deals to:
- Inquire Directly: Call the restaurant or ask staff about any current lunch specials, happy hour deals, or seasonal promotions.
- Check Online: Look for information on their official website (if available) or reputable food review sites that might list user-submitted specials.
- Visit During Off-Peak Hours: Sometimes, restaurants offer better value during slower periods.
The primary "offer" at Sagami remains its consistent delivery of "the best and most authentic Japanese food" that many patrons have found outside of Japan.

Sagami Reviews
I have been to Sagami a few times and like this restaurant. Food is delicious, however, I don’t recommend udon noddle soup because the noddle was a little over cooked and became too soft. The bento box is great with variety of choice!
January 04 · Joanne ChenWe had a fantastic experience at Sagami tonight, where we went for my birthday. We got agedashi mochi, hitsumabushi, and the matcha/mochi dessert set. It was by far the best and most authentic Japanese food I've had outside of Japan. The hitsumabushi was by far the star - eel on rice, served with dashi. The eel sauce was excellent - savory and mildly sweet the way it is in Japan, not syrupy and very sweet like in the US. This was particularly exciting for me - I have fructose malabsorption so I can't eat high fructose corn syrup, which most US eel sauce is made with. I confirmed that theirs is made without, so I could eat safely. So exciting for me to get unagi! The agedashi and dessert were also delicious, and the sake list was impressive. Absolutely my new favorite local restaurant! 😁
January 23 · Samantha DresselWe ordered the Hana which included a combo of sashimi, appetizers, salad, soup, & nigiri. Everything was delicious and well thought out. We also ordered the oh no roll and really liked the simplicity of the roll. We shared that between 2 people and that was perfect for us. Service was great, the staff was very attentive. I will definitely come back.
July 11 · Abbie NStopped by for a casual dinner and really impressed by the food and service. We sat at the sushi counter so in addition to the great food, we also got to watch the two friendly chef working their magic with precision, focus, and a pace that's fast but not hurried. Between my wife and I, we had 8 small dishes and sushi, and some hot house sake. Every item was well made with lovely plating, and the price was very reasonable. Will definitely visit again!
March 03 · Bing WangFood is excellent as always - service is ok and pretty attentive. I do want to put a warning here that the restaurant allowed a dog (handheld/not leashed) to sit at an indoor table. This is likely against California law, and there’s actually an outside area for that. I love dogs but this isn’t the most food-safe practice and I have allergies…
