Soko Sushi Introduce
For those in California with a discerning palate and a love for exceptional Japanese cuisine, there's a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Santa Monica that promises an unforgettable sushi experience: Soko Sushi. This intimate restaurant offers a truly authentic taste of Japan, guided by the masterful hands of Chef Masa.
Soko Sushi is not just another sushi spot; it's a culinary journey. Located within the prestigious Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows, Soko (which fittingly means "storeroom" in Japanese) provides a unique and personal dining atmosphere. The name is a nod to the historical origins of sushi, when fish was preserved in dark storerooms with rice and salt, a practice that eventually evolved into the art form we cherish today.
Chef Masa Shimakawa, originally from Hakodate, Hokkaido, brings decades of expertise and a deep passion for sushi to Soko. He's known for his meticulous preparation and creative approach, emphasizing the quality and freshness of ingredients. Around 70% of the fish served at Soko is directly imported from Japan, often arriving from Tokyo fish markets multiple times a week. This commitment to sourcing premium, fresh fish is evident in every bite, making it a standout destination for sushi aficionados across California.
Many Californians seek out dining experiences that offer both quality and a distinctive ambiance, and Soko Sushi delivers on both fronts. Whether you're a long-time resident of Santa Monica or simply visiting the Los Angeles area, Soko Sushi provides a serene escape from the bustling city, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the flavors and artistry of traditional Japanese sushi.
Soko Sushi is conveniently located within the luxurious Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows, a prominent landmark at 101 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90401, USA. This prime location places it just steps away from the iconic Santa Monica Pier, the vibrant Third Street Promenade, and the beautiful beaches, making it an ideal dining destination whether you're a local or exploring the area as a visitor.
Getting to Soko Sushi is straightforward for those in the California region. For drivers, the hotel offers valet parking, ensuring a smooth arrival. Public transportation options are also readily available, with several bus lines and the Metro Expo Line providing easy access to downtown Santa Monica. Its central position ensures that it's a manageable trip for anyone in the greater Los Angeles area looking for a premium sushi experience.
The setting inside the Fairmont Miramar adds to the overall experience. While it's located within a grand hotel, Soko Sushi itself is an intimate space, often described as an eight-seat sushi bar tucked discreetly in the lobby. This unique setup offers diners a direct view of Chef Masa in action, providing an immersive and engaging culinary show that truly enhances the meal. This close proximity to the chef allows for an almost one-on-one interaction, a rare treat for sushi enthusiasts.

Soko Sushi Reviews
We tried the Omakase which was an amazing experience. Soko Sushi is located within the Fairmont Miramar and Chef Masa is very personable and creates the most creative and authentic dishes. The bluefin platter really hit the spot. Will be back.
Mar 01, 2025 · Michael LauThis was an amazing experience! We had the omakase, which was prepared meticulously. Each bite was a revelation. We paired it with a Japanese whiskey flight which I highly recommend. Make a reservation to ensure that you can sit at the counter and get to witness the sushi chefs in action. Highly recommend!
Apr 20, 2025 · AlessandraSome high quality sushi, but highly influenced by the other guests in there since it is so small. Given that it is in the Fairmont, that can be a crapshoot (like the day we went where two of the female guests were a bit tipsy, super ornery, and loud - overshadowing our experience).
Jul 09, 2024 · Drew MExquisite cuisine. I had the omakase menu, which was 6 courses of perfection. The restaurant is a tiny, 8 seat counter with two tables outside. Chef is welcoming and truly very kind. Service was prompt and friendly.First course was a chilled egg custard. This had a wonderful balance between salinity and sweetness of the lobster buried in the egg. A dollop of uni on top added just the finish. Next was a bowl of ankimo. Sweet, rich, with a nice contrast with acidity and a bit of spiciness.Third course was a soy cured tuna. This was finished with a quail yolk, mountain yam, and daikon sprouts, and black truffle. Truly decadent with perfectly balance flavors and a nice contrast in textures. Very creative, beautiful to look at, and a delight to eat.Next came a rather pretty bowl of sashimi. This may be the best raw shrimp I have ever had. Of course the toro and salmon were superb. This came with freshly grated wasabi and a rich soy sauce. Fifth was a parade of nigiri. Highlights included a fabulous uni, but each selection was top notch.Last but not least was a crab miso soup with mushrooms, bok choy, and a nice accent of spice from gochujang. A perfect way to end an exquisite meal. This rivals some of the top sushi restaurants I’ve been to. Truly a fabulous visit!
Oct 09, 2022 · Vivian ChengI was really excited to have some really good sushi and it did not disappoint! We had the 12 piece nigiri and omakase menus. The fish was fresh and delicious and the seasoning was on point, the rice was the best I've had! Omakase had a good flow and looked beautiful and delicious. Both the chefs and host were really nice and I had a lot of fun watching the chefs craft the meals in this cozy spot
