It's well-served by Portland's comprehensive public transportation system, including MAX light rail and numerous bus lines, making it a convenient destination for those commuting from different parts of the city or surrounding areas. For those arriving by car, street parking might be available, though it can sometimes be challenging to find, especially during peak hours. There are also several parking garages in the vicinity. While the immediate surroundings of NW Broadway can be described as "a bit sketchy" by some, particularly at certain times, many patrons find that the warm and welcoming atmosphere inside SUSHI ICHIBAN outweighs any external considerations. Its downtown setting makes it an ideal spot for a quick and satisfying meal if you're working, shopping, or exploring the city center.
SUSHI ICHIBAN provides a casual and interactive dining experience, primarily centered around its unique sushi train concept, complemented by traditional restaurant services.
- Sushi Train / Conveyor Belt Dining: This is the signature service. Plates of sushi, rolls, and other small Japanese dishes continuously circulate on a miniature train track that runs past all the tables and counter seats. Diners can simply grab the plates they desire as they pass by. Plates are typically color-coded to indicate price.
- Made-to-Order Sushi: While the train offers a wide selection, customers can also place special orders directly with the sushi chefs or servers for specific items not currently on the belt or for enhanced freshness.
- Dine-In Service: The restaurant offers a casual and cozy setting for customers to enjoy their meal directly at the counter or at small tables adjacent to the sushi train. It can accommodate larger parties if a reservation is made, though it's a "hole in the wall" type spot.
- Takeout Service: For those on the go, SUSHI ICHIBAN offers takeout options, allowing customers to enjoy their favorite sushi and Japanese dishes at home or elsewhere.
- Delivery Services: The restaurant partners with third-party delivery platforms such as Uber Eats and Postmates, providing the convenience of having their food delivered directly to your location.
- Extensive Menu: Beyond sushi and rolls (including popular options like fresh salmon, tuna rolls, spicy tuna rolls, California rolls, and special rolls like the "Caboose"), the menu includes a variety of appetizers (e.g., gyoza, edamame, tempura, karaage), ramen, udon, yakisoba, and other Japanese entrees. They also offer desserts like mochi ice cream and various cakes.
- Vegan and Vegetarian Options: SUSHI ICHIBAN is noted for its strong commitment to plant-based diners, offering a good variety of vegan and vegetarian rolls, vegan ramen, udon, tofu dishes, and vegan bao options. Staff are generally helpful in identifying and preparing vegan options.
SUSHI ICHIBAN stands out in Portland's dining scene due to several unique features and highlights that contribute to its lasting appeal and local favoritism.
- The Iconic Sushi Train: The most distinctive feature is the "little train" that continuously carries plates of sushi around the restaurant. This "conveyor belt sushi" system is not only efficient but also adds a fun, interactive, and "nostalgic" element to the dining experience that particularly delights customers of all ages.
- "Hole in the Wall" Charm and Nostalgia: Many long-time patrons describe the place as a "little hole in the wall joint" that "feels stuck in time, but in a good way." This unpretentious and consistent atmosphere has created a loyal following, with customers appreciating that it "just hasn't changed" over the years. It's a place that evokes fond memories and offers a comforting familiarity.
- "Incredibly Sweet People" and Friendly Staff: The staff at SUSHI ICHIBAN consistently receive praise for being "incredibly sweet," "friendly," "attentive," and "super cool and nice." This warm hospitality contributes significantly to the overall positive dining experience and makes customers feel welcomed.
- Good Quality and Value: Despite its casual setting and generally affordable prices, the food is consistently described as "very good" and "good food." Many find it to be "cheap, decent sushi" and a place where you can "stuff your face for $15 safely," offering excellent value for the quality received. They are known for "fresh, well-priced, and generous in its portions."
- Extensive Vegan and Vegetarian Options: A significant highlight for many is the impressive array of vegan and vegetarian items available, including various rolls, vegan bao, and even vegan ramen. The staff's willingness to accommodate vegan requests and knowledge of ingredients is highly appreciated, making it a reliable choice for plant-based diners.
- Diverse Menu Beyond Sushi: While sushi is the main draw, SUSHI ICHIBAN offers a broader Japanese menu, including udon, ramen, tempura, and other appetizers, catering to diverse tastes and hunger levels. The gyoza are also noted for being flavorful.
- Real Wasabi Available: A subtle but important detail for sushi aficionados, some reviews mention that "real wasabi" is available upon request, indicating an attention to authentic details.
While SUSHI ICHIBAN is already known for its generally affordable pricing and good value, especially within the context of downtown Portland, specific ongoing "promotions" or "special offers" in the traditional sense (like discounts or happy hours) are not explicitly highlighted in the provided reviews. However, the nature of a sushi train restaurant inherently offers a form of continuous "special" through its flexible pricing and diverse selection.
- Plate-Based Pricing: The sushi train model means that items are priced per plate, usually indicated by plate color or pattern. This allows diners to control their budget by choosing plates that fit their desired price point and appetite, effectively creating a customizable "special" experience based on their selections. Reviews often mention leaving "super full for under 10 bucks," highlighting this inherent value.
- Consistent Value: Many customers consider the consistent quality and reasonable price of the sushi to be an ongoing "deal" in itself, particularly for the downtown area. It's seen as a place for "cheap and fast vegan sushi" and "good value for price."
To discover any potential limited-time offerings or seasonal specials, it's always advisable to:
- Check the Train: New or seasonal items might appear on the conveyor belt without prior advertising.
- Inquire with Staff: The friendly staff can inform you about any daily specials or new additions that aren't yet widely publicized.
Ultimately, the overall affordability and the fun, self-serve style of the sushi train are the main attractions, serving as a continuous draw for budget-conscious and experience-seeking locals.

SUSHI ICHIBAN Reviews
Little hole in the wall joint with incredibly sweet people running the place. It's a really nostalgic restaurant for me- been coming here for years and it feels stuck in time, but in a good way. I feel like it just hasn't changed. Good food, good atmosphere. It's a reliable old favorite place I'll always visit when in the area. All these years and the little train still makes me smile.
Apr 17, 2025 · ChelseaThe area is a bit sketchy, but we came by when the area was enveloped in the starlight parade. Was immediately greeted by a staff member who was highly motivated, but he was the only one. The remaining staff seemed as if they did want to be there. The food, however, was very good and we struggled through sticky counters and spotty service to enjoy decent sushi. Hard to say if we'll return, but if you're in the area, might be a good stop when you're craving sushi.
Jun 03, 2024 · Gary PiazzaUnsure if it was the owner or manager (the man with the red hat) who greeted us, but their hospitality was exceptional. The food was incredibly fresh and delicious. Despite it being after hours, he kindly offered to take additional orders before we left if we wanted. Coming from out of state, we've never experienced such quality like this.
Mar 31, 2024 · Kelvin LeThe sushi is fresh and tasty *AND* it’s budget-friendly. My husband and I have been going nearly every week since we found out about it. Finally, the service is always great!
May 18, 2025 · Jamie GI waited 2 years for the sesame balls. Oh, they did not disappoint! (I'm from out of town) The tempura Philly roll was very yummy! And the Poppers were a delightful treat!
