In a state renowned for its diverse and high-quality Japanese cuisine, sushi ii distinguishes itself through an unwavering commitment to authenticity and perfection.
The essence of sushi ii lies in its dedication to showcasing the inherent flavors of the finest ingredients. Reviewers often note that the "chefs allow the quality of their food to speak the loudest," indicating a philosophy that prioritizes the natural excellence of the fish rather than masking it with excessive sauces or elaborate presentations. However, this minimalist approach certainly doesn't detract from the visual appeal; the presentation of each dish is frequently lauded as "stunning," adding another layer to the overall dining pleasure. Whether you're a seasoned sushi connoisseur or looking to experience Japanese culinary artistry at its peak, sushi ii offers an unparalleled journey for the palate, making it an absolute "must" for anyone serious about top-tier sushi in Newport Beach.
sushi ii is elegantly situated at 100 West Coast Hwy Suite 202, Newport Beach, CA 92663, USA. This prime location places it directly on the iconic West Coast Highway, making it a prominent and easily reachable destination within Newport Beach's vibrant dining scene. Being located in such a well-known area offers excellent accessibility for both local residents and visitors exploring the beautiful Orange County coastline.
One of the practical advantages of sushi ii's location is the convenient parking. The restaurant is located within a structure, and parking is readily available on Levels 1 to 3, with the restaurant itself situated on Level 2. This dedicated parking amenity greatly enhances the convenience for diners, removing the common concern of finding parking in a popular coastal city.
sushi ii maintains specific operating hours to cater to its clientele, offering both lunch and dinner services. For lunch, they are open Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM (though some sources indicate 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, it's best to confirm with the restaurant directly). Dinner service is available Tuesday through Sunday from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM (with some sources indicating 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, direct confirmation is recommended for precision). They are closed on Mondays. This structured schedule allows them to focus on delivering a consistent, high-quality experience for every seating. The combination of its prestigious address, convenient parking, and carefully managed hours makes sushi ii a well-appointed and accessible choice for an exceptional Japanese dining experience in Newport Beach.
Omakase Dining Experience: sushi ii specializes in "Omakase," meaning "Chef's selection." This allows guests to fully immerse themselves in the chef's culinary artistry, with a multi-course meal meticulously prepared and presented. There are typically multiple Omakase course options available, varying in price and number of dishes.
À La Carte Ordering: For those who prefer to choose their own selections, sushi ii also offers an à la carte menu. This provides flexibility for diners to order individual pieces of sushi, sashimi, or other Japanese delicacies based on their preferences.
Dine-In Service: The restaurant provides a meticulously designed minimalist Zen setting, allowing guests to become fully immersed in the experience. The dining environment is crafted to highlight the artistry and exceptional quality of the sushi, akin to what one might find in Japan.
Takeout Service (Limited Availability): sushi ii offers limited takeout options, typically for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. They offer a selection from their à la carte menu, including items like Deluxe Chirashi, Cherry Blossom Chirashi, Box Sushi, Battera, and various rolls. Pickup times are often limited (e.g., 5:15 PM or 7:30 PM or after), and pre-orders may be required, with a cut-off time for placing orders.
Reservations Recommended: Given its reputation and popularity, particularly for Omakase, reservations are highly recommended and often required, especially for parties enjoying the Omakase experience. A deposit per person may be required for reservations.
Private Room Dining: sushi ii may offer options for private dining experiences, especially for larger parties or special occasions, allowing for a more intimate and exclusive setting.
Incredibly Fresh, Melt-in-Your-Mouth Fish: This is consistently the most lauded aspect of sushi ii. Customers repeatedly use phrases like "incredibly fresh," "melt-in-your-mouth quality," and "pure perfection" to describe the fish. This highlights the restaurant's commitment to sourcing the highest quality, pristine seafood, a critical element for authentic and superior sushi.
Authentic Japanese Culinary Experience: Many diners feel transported to Japan, noting that the experience "felt like I was back in Japan." This indicates a high level of authenticity in both the preparation and the overall dining ambiance, which is a significant draw for those seeking a genuine taste of Japanese sushi culture.
Stunning Presentation: Beyond the taste, the visual artistry of the dishes is frequently highlighted. The presentation is described as "stunning," demonstrating the chefs' attention to detail and dedication to making each plate a work of art. This enhances the overall sensory experience of dining.
Omakase Focus with Chef's Expertise: sushi ii is renowned for its Omakase (chef's selection) offerings, which allow guests to experience the full breadth of Chef Susumu Ii's mastery. Chef Ii is a classically trained master in both sushi and traditional Japanese "washoku" dishes, ensuring a genuine and authentic culinary journey. The minimalist design of the sushi counter allows guests to fully immerse themselves in the chef's precision and meticulous attention to detail.
Quality of Food Speaks Loudest: Customers appreciate that the "chefs allow the quality of their food to speak the loudest." This indicates a philosophy of letting the natural, exquisite flavors of the fresh ingredients be the star, rather than relying on heavy sauces or overpowering preparations.
Variety of Omakase Courses: sushi ii offers different Omakase options, such as the "Bizen," "Oribe," and "Karatsu" courses, each varying in scope and price. These courses often include a progression of dishes like starters, appetizers, sashimi, grilled dishes, nigiri, and dessert, providing a comprehensive Japanese dining experience.
Comprehensive Takeout Menu (Limited): For those who prefer to dine at home, sushi ii offers a curated takeout menu, featuring items like Deluxe Chirashi (which can include high-quality ingredients like toro, uni, ikura, and abalone), Cherry Blossom Chirashi, and various pressed or rolled sushi options (e.g., hako-zushi, Battera, Mackerel rod-shaped sushi).
Meticulous Preparation (Nigirikata): The chefs' precision extends to the "nigirikata," the art of shaping each piece of sushi, ensuring that it is uniquely cut and crafted to enhance the flavor and texture of the fish. This demonstrates a deep respect for the craft of sushi-making.
Given sushi ii's positioning as a premium sushi destination with a focus on authentic Omakase experiences, it is less likely to feature frequent, publicly advertised promotional discounts in the same way a more casual eatery might. The value at sushi ii is inherent in the exceptional quality of its ingredients, the masterful skill of its chefs, and the unique, authentic dining experience it provides.
However, for restaurants of this caliber, potential "special offers" might take different forms:
Seasonal Omakase Menus: As highlighted by Michelin Guide notes and customer reviews, sushi ii likely offers evolving Omakase menus that feature seasonal ingredients. These are not discounts but rather special culinary journeys that showcase the freshest produce and seafood available, providing a unique experience for regulars and first-time guests alike.
Special Event Bookings: For private events or larger groups, there might be bespoke arrangements or menu options that can be discussed directly with the restaurant. This is more about tailoring an exclusive experience than a promotional discount.
Takeout Specials (Limited): While their primary focus is dine-in Omakase, the existence of a specific takeout menu for certain days (Fridays and Saturdays) might occasionally feature specific bundled options or limited-time offerings on their Chirashi or other to-go items. It's advisable to check their Tock ordering platform or call directly for any such details.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on any special offerings, seasonal menu changes, or exclusive dining experiences, prospective diners are encouraged to visit sushi ii's official website or call them directly. sushi ii Reviews
Hands down the best sushi I’ve ever had in the U.S. — and I’ve tried a lot! The fish is incredibly fresh, melt-in-your-mouth quality, and the presentation is stunning. You can really taste the difference. It honestly felt like I was back in Japan. If you’re a sushi lover, this place in Newport Beach is an absolute must. Pure perfection.
Apr 13, 2025 · Antonina PavliukOrdered A LA Carte and everything was very fresh. Great flavors; the chefs allow the quality of their food to speak the loudest, and we were very impressed. We will be back to try the Omakase.
Apr 13, 2025 · LorinThis place was extremely overpriced. I have had omakases at half the price and twice the quality. Food wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. Average sushi vibes. Would come back if it weren’t for the outrageous cost.
Apr 10, 2025 · Jenna LWe went there for the first time tonight. We will be back. It is a beautiful restaurant with good soft music in the background. The sushi chefs and wait staff were great and very friendly. My water and tea were constantly kept full. They brought me a basket in which to put my purse. We did not order the omakase because that is so much food. They have an a la carte option, which is a big selling point for me. My husband had a gorgeous big plate of sashimi. He said it was great and the fish was very fresh. I had nigiri. I asked the chef to decide for me. It was all great. Then I had a bowl of miso soup and my husband had some rice. They gave us fruit for dessert, but they have wonderful sounding desserts too. It was easy to park. It was only $200, including beer and ginjo sake.
Feb 27, 2025 · SusanI have been here two times. Everything is good. I wonder what those one-star reviewers eat daily in the US. It was exciting to see if I could find a better place at this price range from their previous review, but it ended up being nothing😅
