Sushi Sato Introduce
For those of us in California, especially here in the culinary mecca of San Francisco, the pursuit of an unforgettable sushi experience often leads to the esteemed world of omakase. This is where the chef curates your meal, presenting a progression of exquisite dishes that highlight the freshest seasonal ingredients and the artistry of Japanese cuisine. Sushi Sato, located in the heart of San Francisco, embodies this philosophy, promising a truly remarkable dining journey.
Sushi Sato has quickly established itself as a premier destination for high-quality sushi and an immersive omakase experience. Patrons consistently praise the exceptional food, the attentive service, and the refined atmosphere that sets the stage for a memorable meal. From beautifully prepared dishes to the friendly and engaging interactions with the culinary team, Sushi Sato aims to create an evening that transcends a simple dinner, making it a standout choice for those seeking a sophisticated and authentic Japanese dining adventure in our vibrant city. While a recent review highlighted a concerning issue regarding service charge transparency, the overall sentiment remains strong for the quality of the food and the potential for an outstanding experience.
Sushi Sato is conveniently situated at 1122 Post St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA. This address places it in a central and accessible part of San Francisco, close to Union Square and the bustling downtown area. For locals, this location is advantageous for several reasons.
The area is well-served by San Francisco's extensive public transportation network. Numerous Muni bus lines operate along Post Street and nearby major thoroughfares, providing easy connections from various neighborhoods. While there isn't a BART station immediately at its doorstep, the Powell Street BART station is a reasonable walk or a short bus ride away, making it accessible from across the Bay Area. If you prefer to drive, street parking can be found in the vicinity, though it's typical for central San Francisco to require some patience when searching for a spot. There are also several parking garages in the surrounding Union Square and Tenderloin areas for more convenient options. The sophisticated ambiance of the neighborhood complements Sushi Sato's upscale dining experience, making it an ideal destination for a special evening out in the city. The central location means it's often a convenient choice for pre-theater dining or a post-work indulgence.
Sushi Sato focuses on delivering a refined and comprehensive Japanese dining experience, with a strong emphasis on their meticulously crafted tasting menus. Here's a detailed look at their offerings:
- Omakase (Chef's Tasting Menus): This is the core of the Sushi Sato experience. They offer various omakase options designed by the chef, which typically include a series of appetizers, sushi nigiri pieces, zensai (seasonal delicacies), soup, and dessert. Options may include:
- Petite Nigiri Omakase: Chef's choice of 6 pieces of seasonal fish.
- Exclusive Nigiri Omakase: 5 pieces of premium nigiri, potentially including Uni, Toro, and Wagyu.
- Sashimi Omakase: Chef's choice of 5 kinds, 10 pieces of sashimi.
- Okonomi Tasting | Sushi Bar Experience: A "we leave it up to you" style omakase with a Chef's Starter, 10 pieces of nigiri, soup, and dessert, allowing guests to personalize or choose the traditional omakase style.
- Sato Tasting | Table Experience: Similar to the Okonomi tasting but for table seating, including a Chef's Inspiration Starter, 10 pieces of nigiri, zensai, soup, and dessert.
- Premium Fish and Ingredients: Sushi Sato prides itself on using high-quality and often rare seasonal fish. Their menu features a diverse selection of premium nigiri and sashimi, including various cuts of Bluefin Tuna (Akami, Chu Toro, O-Toro), King Salmon, Ocean Trout, Uni (sea urchin from Santa Barbara and Hokkaido), Wagyu Beef (A5 Grade), Kanpachi (Amberjack), Shima Aji (Yellow Jack), Ji Kinmedai (Golden Eye Snapper), and more.
- Signature Rolls and Maki: While omakase is the focus, they also offer exquisite signature design rolls, such as the Sato Signature Roll (featuring uni, toro, lobster, wagyu, caviar, and truffle), Sato On Fire (spicy tuna, tempura shrimp, asparagus with lobster salad), Rainbow Roll, and various classic maki rolls like Negitoro (fatty tuna with green onion), Salmon Avo, and Spicy Tuna.
- Elegant Cold and Hot Appetizers: Complementing the sushi, their menu includes beautifully prepared cold dishes like Gourmet Medley Tomato Ceviche, Scallop Crudo, Amberjack Crudo with truffle oil, and Tuna Carpaccio. Hot dishes include Wagyu Roast (with dashi risotto), Seared Scallops (Hokkaido scallop with kabocha miso puree), Chicken Karaage, and Crab Miso Risotto.
- Donburi (Rice Bowls): They offer luxurious rice bowls such as the Fatty Tuna Uni Truffle Bowl, King Salmon & Ikura Don, Maguro Uni Caviar Don, Bara Chirashi, and BBQ Unagi Don.
- Dessert: The omakase experience typically concludes with a delightful dessert, such as the praised Yuzu Panna Cotta with red beans.
- Extensive Beverage Program: Sushi Sato features a full bar with a selection of beer, craft cocktails, and a notable sake list, including Junmai Daiginjo varieties. They also have a corkage fee policy ($35/bottle, $50/magnum, 2 bottles max, waived if a bottle is purchased from their list).
Sushi Sato distinguishes itself through several key features that contribute to its reputation as a high-end Japanese dining establishment in San Francisco:
- Exceptional Food Quality and Preparation: Customers consistently praise the "exceptional" food, with the chef's tasting menu being "beautifully prepared" and featuring "plenty of high-quality dishes." The use of premium ingredients like A5 Wagyu, Uni, and Toro is a major highlight.
- Outstanding Service: The service is frequently described as "outstanding," with staff members like Tommy at the bar being noted as "friendly, attentive, and creating a fantastic experience." This personalized attention enhances the overall dining journey.
- Perfect Atmosphere for Special Occasions: The restaurant offers a sophisticated and intimate ambiance, making it "perfect" for special events like Valentine's Day or other celebrations. It's described as tranquil and inviting.
- Omakase-Focused Experience: The dedication to the omakase format ensures a curated and elevated meal where diners can trust the chef's expertise in showcasing the best seasonal offerings. This provides a truly immersive culinary adventure.
- Interactive Sushi Bar Seating: For those who enjoy engaging directly with the chefs, the omakase bar seating offers an intimate experience where you can witness the culinary artistry firsthand.
- Diverse Premium Offerings: Beyond the core omakase, the availability of high-end à la carte items, including rare fish, specialty rolls, and refined hot and cold dishes, provides a wide spectrum of choices for discerning palates.
Sushi Sato operates primarily on an omakase (chef's tasting menu) model, which inherently offers a curated experience at a set price point. While traditional "promotions" like happy hour deals are not typically a feature of such high-end dining, their omakase pricing itself functions as a structured offering. The pricing for their various omakase options are as follows:
- Petite Nigiri Omakase: Around $36.00 for 6 pieces of chef's choice seasonal fish.
- Exclusive Nigiri Omakase: Around $48.00 for 5 pieces of premium nigiri, including Uni, Toro, and Wagyu.
- Sashimi Omakase: Around $45.00 for chef's choice 5 kinds, 10 pieces.
- Sato Tasting | Table Experience: Around $85.00, including a Chef's Inspiration Starter, 10 pieces of nigiri, zensai, soup, and dessert.
- Okonomi Tasting | Sushi Bar Experience: Around $95.00, similar to the Sato Tasting but at the sushi bar, allowing for personalization or traditional omakase style.
These structured menus, while not "discounts," ensure that guests receive a comprehensive and high-quality dining experience for a defined cost. It's important for diners to be aware of the pricing structure and inclusions before booking. Additionally, as noted in a customer review, a 20% service charge is added to the final bill. It is crucial for guests to be aware of this charge to avoid unintentional double-tipping. We recommend clarifying this policy directly with the restaurant or carefully reviewing the bill.
To secure your omakase experience at Sushi Sato, here's how to reach them:
Address: 1122 Post St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA
Phone: (415) 851-8830
Given the nature of an omakase restaurant, reservations are highly recommended, and often required. You can typically make reservations through platforms like OpenTable or by contacting the restaurant directly. It's also advisable to inform them in advance of any dietary restrictions or allergies so they can do their best to accommodate your needs.
For discerning residents of California, particularly those in San Francisco seeking an elevated and authentic Japanese culinary experience, Sushi Sato is exceptionally well-suited. Its central location on Post Street makes it easily accessible for a special occasion dinner, whether coming from work downtown or from other parts of the city via public transit.
The core appeal of Sushi Sato lies in its dedication to the omakase format. For locals who appreciate the artistry and refined flavors of Japanese cuisine, the chef's tasting menus offer a truly immersive and educational journey through seasonal ingredients and masterful preparation. The consistent praise for the "exceptional food" and "high-quality dishes," often highlighting premium ingredients like Wagyu and various toro cuts, speaks directly to the sophisticated palates of San Franciscans.
Furthermore, the "outstanding service" and "perfect atmosphere" create an experience that goes beyond just a meal, fostering a sense of occasion and personalized attention that is highly valued. The intimate setting, whether at the sushi bar interacting with the chefs or at a cozy table, contributes to a memorable evening. While transparency regarding the service charge is an area for the restaurant to improve, the underlying quality of the food and the potential for a truly special dining experience, as highlighted by satisfied customers, make Sushi Sato a compelling choice. It’s ideal for celebrating milestones, indulging in a luxurious culinary adventure, or simply enjoying some of the finest sushi San Francisco has to offer.

Sushi Sato Reviews
We dined at Sushi Sato last week and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The chef’s tasting menu was beautifully prepared.Unfortunately, the experience was marred by what followed. The final bill included a 20% service charge, something we didn’t realize in the moment because it wasn’t immediately obvious. As a result, we unknowingly added an additional 20% tip on top, totaling hundreds of extra dollars. We were happy to tip generously, but this felt like a preventable error. After realizing our mistake while reviewing the bill later that night, we reached out to the restaurant via phone and email the very next day. We’ve followed up several times over the past week and have yet to receive any response whatsoever. No acknowledgment, no clarification, no willingness to address the issue... just silence. This lack of communication is deeply disappointing and unfortunately overshadowed what was otherwise a good meal. In contrast, we visited Trestle (another fantastic SF spot) later that week, where their 20% service charge was clearly circled and no tip line was included, making it impossible to double-tip unintentionally. That’s the kind of thoughtful, transparent experience we appreciate.I don’t take joy in leaving a critical review, but I do believe guests deserve clarity on service charges and the courtesy of a response when they try to rectify a genuine mistake.
May 09, 2025 · Alaina HowerI had an incredible experience here for Valentine’s Day. The food was exceptional, the service was outstanding, and the atmosphere was perfect. We enjoyed the Omakase Set menu, which offered plenty of high-quality dishes. Tommy at the bar truly made the evening special—he was friendly, attentive, and created a fantastic experience for us.
Feb 18, 2025 · Dillan ChongtouaThis hidden gem in Nob Hill was a delight to find, my partner and I had the pleasure of partaking in the omakase experience. We were met with unique and tasty sushi, where the chef explained each intricate step of the sushi making process. The omakase included 12 courses for $125 (after tax&tip) where you are served 8 pieces of sushi, 2 small appetizers, a small sliver of an entree and a dessert. Each course was unique, each with its own special twist. The chef’s presentation of each sushi and the risotto were truly the stars of the night. My only complaints stem from the amount of time we had to wait in between each course and the amount of food received during the experience. While it was lovely to watch such a passionate chef create each individual sushi, we watched other servers and chefs stand around while we were left to starve in between courses. Omakase took 2 hours to finish and we left unsatisfied and still extremely hungry.I highly recommend you visit this location, but eat a quick meal beforehand. This restaurant is definitely worth a try!
Apr 12, 2025 · Anda AchimescuHad a set menu with the new Chef Bo at the bar seating in the front of the house. High quality fish with Chef’s fun twists (like a yuzu pepper sauce on our scallops nigiri). They also had three interesting + good house brewed beers.Couldn’t book the bar seating at first on open table, but ended up asking for it when we got there and are so glad we did. Had a great time with the chef and staff and will be very sad when they become fully booked in the near future.
