Sushi Sonagi Introduce
For discerning diners across California, particularly those in search of an unparalleled sushi experience, the journey often leads to a few select, highly-regarded establishments. Among these, tucked away in Gardena, is a true culinary gem: Sushi Sonagi. This intimate sushi counter offers far more than just a meal; it provides an immersive and deeply personal omakase experience that has quickly earned it a reputation as one of the best in the greater Los Angeles area.
Sushi Sonagi is the brainchild of Chef Daniel Son, a second-generation sushi chef who brings a remarkable blend of traditional Japanese technique, fine dining pedigree, and his own unique Korean-American roots to every meticulously crafted dish. What truly sets Sushi Sonagi apart is its commitment to an intimate setting and a thoughtful, curated journey through flavors and textures. It’s a place where every detail, from the presentation of the sushi to the personalized service, is designed to create a memorable and profoundly enjoyable experience for each guest. Locals rave about the exceptional quality and the genuine passion that Chef Daniel and his team pour into their craft, making it a highly sought-after reservation in the competitive California culinary scene.
Sushi Sonagi is discretely located at 1425 Artesia Blvd UNIT 27, Gardena, CA 90248, USA, situated inside a historic South Bay strip mall. While its location might seem unassuming from the outside, it only adds to its allure as a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by those in the know. Artesia Boulevard is a significant thoroughfare, making it relatively accessible from various parts of Gardena and neighboring communities in the South Bay, including Torrance, Redondo Beach, and Carson.
As an exclusive, reservation-only establishment with limited seating, parking is generally manageable within the shared plaza. However, during peak times, it's wise to arrive a little early to secure a spot. Given its specialized nature, public transportation might require a short walk from major bus stops, but for those seeking such a high-caliber dining experience, the journey is well worth it. This location allows Sushi Sonagi to serve as a convenient, albeit exclusive, destination for sushi aficionados across the South Bay and beyond.
Sushi Sonagi operates on a highly specialized model, focusing entirely on delivering an exceptional omakase experience:
- Exclusive Omakase Dining: This is the singular service offered. Guests partake in a multi-course tasting menu entirely curated by Chef Daniel Son. The menu changes seasonally, ensuring the freshest ingredients and a dynamic culinary journey with each visit.
- Intimate Counter Seating: The restaurant features a very intimate 7-8 person counter seating arrangement. This allows for direct interaction with Chef Daniel and his team, providing an educational and engaging experience as dishes are prepared right before your eyes.
- Reservation-Only Policy: Due to its limited seating and high demand, Sushi Sonagi does not accept walk-ins. Reservations are essential and are typically secured through platforms like Tock, often requiring booking well in advance.
- Personalized Attention: Customers consistently highlight the thoughtful and kind service. The team pays close attention to individual needs, even noting details like a guest being left-handed and adjusting presentation accordingly, showcasing a profound level of hospitality.
Sushi Sonagi is lauded for several outstanding features that contribute to its celebrated status among California's culinary elite:
- Masterful Omakase by Chef Daniel Son: Chef Daniel is a second-generation sushi chef with extensive training at Michelin-graced restaurants. His omakase is described as a blend of "depth & mastery of sushi tradition" with his "own personal take," creating dishes that are "somehow familiar and novel at the same time." This fusion of traditional Japanese technique with LA and Korean-American roots is a unique signature.
- Extremely Intimate Dining Setting: With only 7-8 counter seats, the experience is incredibly personal and exclusive. This small setting fosters direct engagement with the chef, making each meal feel like a private culinary performance.
- Exceptional Ingredient Sourcing: The restaurant prides itself on carefully sourcing ingredients with "sustainability & seasonality in mind," utilizing the highest quality local ingredients alongside the freshest Japanese fish. This commitment to quality is palpable in every bite.
- Thoughtful and Attentive Service: Beyond the food, the service provided by Chef Daniel and his wife (who manages the front of house) is consistently praised as "so so kind and amazing." Guests feel truly cared for, with the team going above and beyond to ensure comfort and enjoyment, creating an "incredible ambiance & environment."
- Unique Culinary Perspective: The omakase at Sushi Sonagi is described as "Los Angeles-mae," reflecting a menu inspired by Japanese and Korean cuisine, techniques, and hospitality that mirrors the rich and diverse history of the South Bay, California. This innovative approach offers a distinct experience not found elsewhere.
- Worthwhile Indulgence: While it is a premium dining experience, customers universally agree it is "well worth the price" for the quality, artistry, and overall journey provided. It is considered a privilege to dine here, underscoring its high regard.
Given its exclusive omakase model and high demand, Sushi Sonagi typically does not offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the conventional sense. The experience itself is the premium offering, and its value is derived from the exceptional quality of ingredients, the chef's artistry, and the intimate, personalized service. Any variations in the menu would be due to seasonal ingredient availability, ensuring the freshest and most unique dishes for each seating. The price for the omakase is approximately $230-$300 per person, varying slightly. Reservations often require a deposit, which is typically returned upon arrival.

Sushi Sonagi Reviews
Best omakase experience I’ve ever had! Chef Daniel and his team were so so kind and amazing and the food was equally as amazing.Pictured are just a handful of dishes but every dinner menu may look different so these are mostly for my own documentation and memories!Very intimate 7 person counter seating. Everything in the experience is super thoughtful - they noticed I was left handed and adjusted presentation accordingly 🥹.Would highly recommend to anyone😄
Mar 18, 2025 · Michele ShiNot sure how I haven’t reviewed this place sooner! This is my / our (including my wife) favorite restaurant in LA, and favorite omakase experience ever! There is too much to praise here… Daniel and his wife create an incredible ambiance & environment for enjoying the depth & mastery of sushi tradition, somehow blended with his own person take in every course.Chef Daniel curates every dish thoughtfully, and each bite feels somehow familiar and novel at the same time. You taste the LA, Korean-American roots; fine dining pedigree; and traditional Japanese technique throughout the meal.Beyond the food & service, each ingredient is also carefully sourced with sustainability & seasonality in mind. I truly cannot recommend Sushi Sonagi enough, and also understand what a privilege it is to be able to pay for a meal like this. For those who can, it is well worth the price.(Photos kept to the social media famous ones to try and keep some element of surprise in the dishes!)
Feb 13, 2025 · Jonathan KimWow! Soooo good! I have been fortunate to explore many omakase and Chef Daniel’s intimate 8 seater is my new favorite. To my surprise this gem is in my hometown, the chef is local too and he uses some local ingredients as well as the freshest Japanese fish. So many dishes and types of fish I had not tried before, many firsts! The two hour session was amazing, the service (his lovely wife) attentive they are a cute team, and the vibe was really chill, friendly and conversation filled!I’ll be back, if I can secure another reservation (on tock) to take my husband so he can experience my new favorite. Thanks Sonagi!! I’ll be thinking about the tasty bites!
Jul 28, 2024 · Lori IThe food was delicious. The service was excellent. Atmosphere was good. Small intimate dining experience. Chef is personable and friendly. It is worth the experience. Wife and husband are awesome hosts. Food and drink worth the price of admission for sushi and seasonal food.
Jul 22, 2024 · G YThe crescendo of flavors starting with the white fish/white rice combination, stepping through the amberjack and baby shrimp, converting to the red vinegar infused rice for the blue backed fish and the finale of eel, uni and Toro handroll were all wonderful. Seasonally sourced and changing by the week, Sonagi's omokase delivers the seasonal delicacies. There is no salmon or yellowtail and the Toro only makes an appearance at the end of the course. If you can get a reservation (check the Instagram or the tock page for details), run to the Gardena strip mall as soon as you can.If there is a complaint, from my point of view, the full flavor of the two blue backed fish on the menu was muted a bit TOO much, but I understand I am in a fairly small minority that likes the salty ocean taste in the horse mackerel type fish.I look forward to seeing the restaurant progress and evolve over time and hopefully will be back soon.
