Beyond the food itself, the overall dining experience at an omakase restaurant is integral. Sushi Yoshizumi aims to provide this immersive experience, making it a valuable addition to California's diverse culinary landscape for anyone with a passion for authentic Japanese cuisine.
Sushi Yoshizumi is conveniently located at 325 E 4th Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401, USA. Situated in San Mateo, a vibrant city on the San Francisco Peninsula, the restaurant is easily accessible for residents and visitors throughout the Bay Area. While the address is straightforward, it's worth noting that the restaurant is known for not having an obvious sign, making it a bit of a hidden gem. However, according to customer reviews, servers are attentive and often come out to greet guests as soon as the restaurant opens, ensuring you're welcomed even without a prominent sign.
San Mateo's central location in the Bay Area makes Sushi Yoshizumi reachable from various points. If driving, San Mateo offers various parking options, though it's always advisable to check for nearby public parking or street parking availability, especially during peak dining hours. Its location also places it within easy reach of major highways, facilitating access for those coming from San Francisco, Silicon Valley, or other parts of the wider California region.
While the restaurant's immediate surroundings near the train track might mean occasional train horn sounds, as noted by some diners, this is generally considered a minor aspect that does not detract significantly from the overall dining experience. The ease of access, combined with its reputation, positions Sushi Yoshizumi as a desirable destination for sushi aficionados across California.
Sushi Yoshizumi focuses on delivering a specialized and high-quality dining experience. Their primary service revolves around the traditional omakase format, ensuring a curated and memorable meal for every guest. Here’s what you can expect:

- Fresh, Seasonal Ingredients: The menu heavily relies on the freshest available seasonal ingredients, ensuring a dynamic and ever-evolving selection of appetizers and sushi pieces. This commitment to seasonality guarantees peak flavor and quality.
- Expertly Prepared Appetizers: Beyond the sushi, the omakase includes various appetizers designed to complement the main sushi courses. Past favorites mentioned by customers include meticulously prepared ankimo (monkfish liver) and grilled Mehikari fish.
- High-Quality Sushi Selection: While the specific fish served varies by season, the restaurant consistently offers high-quality cuts. Past highlights have included exquisite Kasugo (baby snapper) and Anago (sea eel), among other delightful pieces like sanma and ika geso.
- Dessert Course: The omakase experience typically concludes with a light and refreshing dessert, such as melon, providing a sweet finish to the meal.
Sushi Yoshizumi stands out in the California sushi scene for several distinct features and highlights that contribute to its unique appeal:

- Professional Chef: Customer reviews frequently praise the professionalism of the chef, highlighting their skill, precision, and dedication to their craft, which is central to the omakase experience.
- Intimate Dining Setting: While not explicitly detailed, the focus on omakase and mentions of only one server suggest an intimate atmosphere, allowing for a more personal connection with the culinary process.
- Top-Tier Service (despite staffing): Despite occasional mentions of a single server, the service is still highly regarded as "top-tier" by patrons, emphasizing attentiveness and a pleasant dining interaction.
- Hidden Gem Appeal: The absence of a visible sign adds to its allure as a discovery for those seeking a true, unpretentious sushi experience, rather than a flashy storefront.
As a traditional omakase restaurant, Sushi Yoshizumi typically focuses on delivering a premium, curated dining experience rather than running frequent promotions or special offers in the conventional sense. The value is primarily derived from the high quality of ingredients, the chef's expertise, and the unique, intimate nature of the omakase meal itself.
Given the nature of omakase, where the menu is determined by the chef based on daily availability and seasonality of the best ingredients, the concept of "special offers" often translates to the ever-changing, unique selections presented during your visit. Each dining experience is, in essence, a special offer of the freshest and finest available on that particular day.
For specific information regarding any potential seasonal menus, special tasting events, or unique ingredient highlights that might be considered "offers," it is always best to directly contact Sushi Yoshizumi. Due to their focus on an exclusive and personalized dining journey, any "promotions" would likely be communicated directly to guests upon reservation or during their visit, highlighting exceptional ingredients or rare seasonal finds.

Sushi Yoshizumi Reviews
If you’re looking for a traditional omakase or sushi experience, this place is definitely a solid choice. The fish was fresh, the chef was professional, and overall I thought it was a good experience. Of course if you’re comparing it to places in New York or LA, or especially sushi in Japan, it’s not quite on that level. But for San Francisco, I think it holds up well. I’d still give it five stars.
May 11, 2025 · OliviaThe restaurant is not easy to find because there's no sign. However, the server came out as soon as it opened. In general, I think the food is high quality but it's a little bit pricey compared with other sushi restaurants. The restaurant was recently removed from its Michelin star and I think it has a solid reason. Since there was only one server at the restaurant, the service can be less attentive. To me it is not a big issue but I think for Michelin it is an important index. I still need to point out that the service is still top tier though.Let's focus on the food. All ingredients are seasonal and prepared well. For the appetizers, I like the ankimo the best. The grilled 目光(Mehikari) fish was also delicious. For the sushi parts, I found most dishes to be mediocre, considering they had a Michelin star before. However, there were still several dishes that really amazed me. I liked 春子鯛(Kasugo) and 穴子(Anago) the best. The sanma and ika geso were also delicious. However, for bluefin tuna only akami and chutoro were served, no otoro. Finally, I like the melon for the desserts. In terms of atmosphere, the restaurant location is near the train track so you can hear the horn from time to time. Also, the air conditioning could be better in my opinion especially since it was a hot day when I visited. The sake served became warm quickly. In general, I would still say this is a good sushi place but there may be better choices around the bay area.
Oct 20, 2024 · Yi-Hsiang LaiHighly skilled chef working with the best produce.Difficult to get a reservation, but worth the effort.Cod stomach and Monk fish liver were new to me and highlights of the evening.
Dec 01, 2023 · Lander FoquetYou only realize why it’s hard to score a reservation at this 8 seater sushi counter until you try Chef Yoshizumi special sashimi and nigiri tasting menu. Nestled in downtown St Mateo, this Japanese oasis that looks like your neighborhood sushi joint have some of freshest & tastiest seafood I have ever tried. From the Japanese delightful Amberjack to buttery Kinki(Japanese rockfish) to delicious Bonitos nigiri to sea eel nigiri from southern Japan that literally melts in your mouth. Watching the knife action of Chef Yoshizumi was a real treat, he was kind, nice and always smiling. Service was on point and their Sake tasting and choices were delightful and complimentary to the fish courses. The egg custard cake at the end was scrumptious but we didn’t really like the almond custard dessert. Definitely worth the trip and worth another visit.
Dec 31, 2023 · Eias MuradProbably the best sushi in the bay area.Update: Jul 2021Indoor dining open again at Yoshizumi, but with a reduced capacity. The sushi is still just as consistently good. Perfectly seasoned and warm rice and gorgeous nato. Service was warm and attentive.Really a true sushi lover's place - uncomplicated perfection.
