Taishoken Ramen

47 E 4th Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401, USA

4.0
This is one of my favorite spots for Japanese dipping ramen. I especially recommend their takoyaki—it’s super crispy, the sauce is uniquely flavored and very fragrant. The dipping noodles are on the salty side, but still really delicious. The dry noodles have a distinct and tasty flavor as well. I’ll definitely be coming back to try more dishes next time! - YS Huang

Taishoken Ramen Introduce

taishoken, taishoken san mateo, taishouken

For ramen enthusiasts across California, particularly those in the Bay Area, Taishoken Ramen in San Mateo represents a truly unique and authentic Japanese culinary journey. Specializing in "Tsukemen," or Japanese dipping ramen, Taishoken offers a distinct and highly rewarding way to enjoy this beloved noodle dish. Unlike traditional ramen where noodles are served in the broth, Tsukemen features perfectly chilled or room-temperature noodles meant to be dipped into a separate bowl of rich, concentrated, hot broth, allowing for an explosion of flavor with every bite.

Taishoken is not just any ramen spot; it carries the legacy of its founder, Kazuo Yamagishi, who invented Tsukemen in Tokyo in 1961. This San Mateo location is Taishoken's first shop in America, bringing a piece of ramen history and expertise directly to the California dining scene. Beyond their signature dipping noodles, the restaurant also offers traditional ramen bowls and a selection of delicious appetizers, all served within a welcoming and well-designed ambiance that enhances the overall dining experience.

Location and Accessibility

Taishoken Ramen is conveniently located at 47 E 4th Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401, USA. While street parking (often metered during business hours) is available along E 4th Avenue and nearby streets, the area is also well-served by multiple city-owned parking garages. The Central Garage, with entrances on San Mateo Drive, Ellsworth Avenue, and South B Street, is a good option, as are other facilities like the Main Street Garage. These garages provide hourly rates and offer both short-term and longer-term parking solutions. Checking the City of San Mateo's official parking website or using a parking app for real-time availability and pricing is always advisable for the most hassle-free experience.

Features / Highlights

Taishoken Ramen distinguishes itself through several key features and culinary highlights that make it a celebrated destination for ramen lovers in California:

  • Specialization in Tsukemen (Dipping Ramen): This is their signature offering and a major draw. Tsukemen features cold, thick, chewy noodles served separately from a hot, intensely flavored dipping broth. The broth is often made with a rich base of pork, chicken, dried anchovy, and dried bonito. This unique eating style allows customers to control the intensity of each bite.
    • Tokusei Tsukemen: Their special version comes with Jidori soft-boiled egg and sous-vide Berkshire pork chashu, alongside standard toppings like menma bamboo shoots, nori seaweed, and green onion.
  • Highly Praised Takoyaki: Reviewers consistently rave about their Takoyaki (octopus balls), noting its "super crispy" texture and a "uniquely flavored and very fragrant" sauce. This appetizer is a must-try.
  • Rich and Flavorful Broths: Whether for Tsukemen or their traditional ramen, the broths are described as rich, deep, and flavorful, hitting "the perfect amount of flavor." Even the dipping broth, though sometimes on the salty side, is highly praised for its deliciousness.
  • Perfectly Cooked Noodles: The noodles, especially the thick buckwheat noodles for Tsukemen, are highlighted for their quality and texture – "curly and chewy." They also offer "dry noodles" with a distinct and tasty flavor.
  • Perfectly Cooked Eggs: The soft-boiled eggs (ajitama) in their ramen and Tsukemen are consistently noted as being "cooked so perfectly."
  • Quality Meat Toppings: While not a "ton of meat," the chashu (roast pork) is described as having "good quality and flavor." Their Tokusei Ramen also includes rare chashu.
  • Reasonable Pricing and Large Portions: Customers find the meals to be "reasonably priced for a great meal," often noting "larger portions" which add to the value.
  • Appealing Ambiance and Decor: The restaurant's atmosphere is frequently praised. Reviewers "loved the decor," indicating a pleasant and inviting dining environment.
  • Variety of Ramen Options: Beyond Tsukemen, they offer traditional ramen bowls like "Tokusei Ramen," "Spicy Ramen," and "Niku Spicy Ramen" (with extra chashu), ensuring options for various preferences.
  • Vegetable/Vegan-Friendly Ramen: The "Yuzu Shio Ramen (Vegetable)" provides a distinct and flavorful option for those seeking plant-based ramen, made with a kelp and shiitake mushroom broth.
