Umami Omakase is designed to deliver a high-end, fine dining experience centered around the chef's expertise. The term "omakase" translates to "I leave it up to you," signifying a unique interaction where diners surrender their choices to the culinary vision of the chef. This approach allows for a dynamic and personalized meal, showcasing the chef's skill, creativity, and the peak seasonality of ingredients.
Since its opening in late 2019, Umami Omakase has quickly earned accolades, including "Best Sushi of 2021 & 2023 Awards" and being recognized among the "Top 50 restaurants in Boston." The restaurant is known for its "artful" presentation, where each dish is a miniature masterpiece. Guests consistently highlight the phenomenal food, the expertise of the chef (Gary Lei, an Uni alum), and the "attentive" and "cheery" servers who enhance the entire experience. While it is a fine dining establishment, it maintains an intimate and focused atmosphere, allowing the food to take center stage. For special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries, Umami Omakase provides an ideal setting for a truly memorable celebration in Massachusetts.

Given the nature of an Omakase restaurant, Umami Omakase primarily offers its value through the curated experience itself rather than traditional discounts. However, there are aspects that can be considered "special offers" or unique propositions for Massachusetts diners:
- Tiered Omakase Pricing: They offer different Omakase options (e.g., 15-course and 18-course, with prices around $138-$178 per person depending on the day). While not a discount, this provides choices for different budget levels within the high-end dining segment.
- Seasonal Add-ons: The availability of "uni special add-on" and other premium ingredients, while at an additional cost, acts as a special highlight, allowing diners to enhance their experience with rare or highly sought-after items.
- Gift Cards: The availability of gift cards allows for the experience to be given as a thoughtful present, enabling friends and family in Massachusetts to enjoy a unique culinary journey.
- Experience-Based Value: The core "promotion" is the exceptional quality and artistry of the meal itself. Customers frequently state that the "food was off the charts" and "everything was phenomenal," indicating that the value lies in the unparalleled dining experience rather than reduced pricing.
For the most current information on their Omakase formulas or any unique seasonal additions, it is best for Massachusetts residents to visit their official website or contact them directly, as special offerings are integrated into their evolving menu.

Umami Omakase Reviews
We visited for my birthday and we had an amazing time. Food was off the charts, particularly the uni special add-on which the server recommended as the chef’s signature. As good as the uni I had at Hokkaido, Japan last December. Dessert at the end was lowkey impressive.Honestly, the servers made the day. They’re all very cheery in a lowkey way, making casual convo to connect in a non-intrusive way. They were polite and attentive from start to end. I’d say 3 stars out lf 5 are for their service throughout the dinner.Suggestion: start the second dinner service at 8:15pm instead of 8:00pm; the process flow between first and second service times are absolutely terribly designed. Given this is a omakase dinner, everyone finishes at the same time. When your first service time finishes at 8pm, don’t start the next service time at 8pm. Two dozen people for the second service time including us had to wait crammed at the small counter area, while the servers were frantically trying to process all the checks, clean tables, and show guests out the door. Servers were constantly apologetic but honestly pushing back the second service time tl 8:15pm would’ve done the magic.
Apr 20, 2025 · Karl ParkGreat place. First time trying Omakase with my wife on our anniversary. The chef, the food, the servers, ambience, everything was phenomenal. The courses were spaced nicely and were very flavorful. We loved the attention to detail and the effort put into the experience by the chef and staff. Would definitely recommend if in the area and want to try Omakase.
Dec 23, 2024 · Ali MhowwalaUmami always delivers a top notch omakase dining experience every time that we have dined here, from the fresh seafood, great flavors and friendly service. We love dining at the counter and watch Chef Gary and his team busily prepare each wonderful bite. If you prefer more intimate conversations with friends, there are table seating as well.We have enjoyed everything that we have eaten here, especially the oysters, uni spoon, smoked duck breast, wagyu, Australian prawns, chawanmushi, tomago taco, toro, and their homemade ginger. The nigiris have minimal sauce but have great texture and flavor combinations. It is very impressive to have such creativity and variety in preparation of foods in these well composed omakase dinners. Compared to other omakase dining options available in Boston, Umami offers a tremendous value in comparison. Highly recommend!
Mar 10, 2025 · Amber COverall, I had a good experience. You are definitely getting higher quality sushi, but only 1-2 dishes were truly memorable for me. I liked the performative gold glitter section of the experience. The ambiance and plating are on par with a nicer restaurant, not necessarily the price tag (as in, if part of the price is for the ambiance, I would have expected more).
Dec 22, 2024 · _I strongly urge caution if you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies before dining at this restaurant. A member of our party does not eat shellfish due to religious reasons, and we made this clear to both the waitstaff and the kitchen when ordering. We were reassured that none of the dishes would contain shellfish.Unfortunately, midway through our meal, we discovered that one of the dishes did in fact contain shellfish. While the staff was apologetic once this was brought to their attention, they still proceeded to charge us for a dish that directly violated a religious dietary restriction—one they were informed of in advance. This situation could have been far worse had it been a life-threatening allergy. It’s alarming to think what might have happened if this had resulted in a medical emergency. This kind of oversight is not only deeply disappointing but also potentially dangerous. In terms of the overall experience, the service was polite, but the food itself was average at best. The restaurant ambiance left much to be desired—it felt a bit run-down and unrefined.Based on this experience, especially the disregard for clearly communicated dietary needs, I would not recommend this restaurant. It's simply not worth the risk
