Outstanding ramen in a cozy, warm setting 馃崪Akahoshi Ramen, the brainchild of Mike Satinover (aka the Ramen Lord on Reddit), is producing some of the most flavorful, authentic, and creative Ramen dishes in Chicago!We tried the Aburasoba (soupless ramen), the Akahoshi miso, the Shoyu Ramen, and the Akayu Spicy Miso (which was the February special). They鈥檙e all good, but the Akayu Spicy Miso was truly one of the best Ramen dishes I鈥檝e ever had. They say it鈥檚 just a monthly special, but I think it needs to be added to the permanent menu ASAP! It has the perfect mix of salty, spicy, and umami, and the textures of the ingredients work perfectly.Some small things to note: Eggs are not included in the ramen dishes and must be ordered as additions, but they鈥檙e delicious so I would definitely recommend paying the $2 extra and getting the ajitama egg. While the restaurant does take reservations, around half the seating is reserved for walk-in customers. Just be mindful that it does get busy. Be aware that there is a 20% service charge (which substitutes as the tip) added to every check. Overall, this is a gem in Chicago and I hope to be back soon!

The space is modern, simple and cozy with many seats. Service is great and quick.The menu is simple and straightforward and I love that! With all the buzz and rave reviews, I was really curious to see if it lived up to the reputation.My friend and I both ordered the Akahoshi Miso. The broth looked rich and flavorful, but surprisingly, it was just overly salty and still bland somehow? I even added chili pepper ($2 extra for a small cup lol) hoping it would add a kick or enhance the flavor, but it didn鈥檛 help at all.My friend felt the same way about the broth, though she said the chashu was really good. I swapped mine for chicken, and to be fair, it was juicy and well-marinated (probably the best part of the bowl). Noodles were perfectly cooked, you can tell they take care with their ingredients.Still, since the broth is the heart of ramen, it was disappointing overall. This unassuming storefront offers some of the best ramen in the city. The charred pork, broth, and egg all pack a mean punch and is washed down smoothly with any of the delicious junmai sake they offer up.

Had heard a lot about this place and has been meaning to go once the hype calmed down.I feel like the hype about this place may have affected the reviews (inflated expectations). There were long wait times which also affected expectations. I鈥檓 glad I was able to avoid that with a reservation.I got the Butter Corn Crab Ramen which was decadent. Broth was creamy and light with an underlying seafood umami layer. Noodles were bouncy, chewy, and firm.The noodle is usually what lets me down at most ramen places so I鈥檓 happy to see that they really paid attention to it.Before Rudy鈥檚 and Akahoshi existed I used to tell people that Chicago had no good ramen (this is after more than a decade of living here). Currently, these are the only two places in Chicago that I would get ramen from. Outside of Chicago it would be DANBO in Seattle.In Chicago I鈥檝e tried Wasabi, Oiistar, Kinton, Kizuki, Gyuro, Ramen-San, Ramen Takeya, etc - and none of them come even close to how good this place with. It almost feels like eating a completely different dish.My husband got the namesake ramen which was good, but I felt like after tasting the complexity of the Butter Corn Crab Ramen - the namesake ramen tasted more two dimensional in comparison. I do hope they bring that special back.Kitchen was pristine and on full display. Everything had a timer on it which gave me an idea on how they continue to deliver on consistent quality. I can see in many ways.. from the layout of the restaurant, to the curation of the menu, to the respect each ingredient was treated with - that this was a thoughtful place. As they say - how you do one thing is how you do everything.Also their chili powder is no joke. Proceed with caution.
