Donburiya

253 W 55th St, New York, NY 10019, USA

4.0
I’ve been here a handful of times - it’s deliciously well-priced authentic Japanese food (with a very nice izakaya vibe), and the space is large enough that I have never had to wait for a table. The menu is pretty long (can be a bit difficult à la decision paralysis) and they have a (cute handwritten) menu of specials, so I must admit I haven’t tried most of their dishes (nor any of their drinks). But what I have gotten has consistently been fantastic - some highlights include:- Oroshi tonkatsu set: the katsu is so yummy with a wonderful texture (fried to a good balance of not being too oily or soggy). The whole set comes with a generous amount of food (soup, salad as well), and specifically I just love the taste of oroshi in the light dashi broth. I’ve also had the curry katsu before - the curry itself was pretty good, nothing too notable to point out, and the katsu was similarly delicious.- Sukiyaki donburi was a particular favourite. The sweet flavour went with the tender sliced beef so nicely, and it came with a good assortment of tofu, veggies, and egg for a very well balanced dish. Yakiniku don was yummy too - not too salty, beef savoury and well-cooked, and the rice/sauce combo complemented everything nicely.I’ve had the chicken karaage as an appetiser a few times before, and it was a bit inconsistent each time (sometimes a bit soggy breading / not tender meat). I feel like it’s not really worth the price (especially compared to the cost most of the main dishes on the menu).Indeed, overall the price point is very solid here - esp for the neighbourhood. Even though I read some reviews suggesting that they are a no-tip restaurant, I fear this may no longer be the case, sigh. Would love to come back again soon! - Matthew Ho

  • Lunch Service: Donburiya is a popular spot for lunch, offering well-priced options that include sets with miso soup and salad, making it ideal for a midday meal in the neighborhood.

  • Late-Night Dining: A significant highlight for New Yorkers, Donburiya often maintains late-night hours, particularly on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (until 2:30 AM), making it a convenient option for late-night cravings when many other places are closed.

  • Takeout and Delivery: For ultimate convenience, Donburiya offers takeout and delivery services through popular platforms like Seamless and Grubhub, allowing you to enjoy their delicious food in the comfort of your own home or office.

Features / Highlights

Donburiya has earned its reputation in New York City's competitive dining scene through several distinctive features and consistent highlights that resonate strongly with its customers.

  • Deliciously Well-Priced Authentic Japanese Food: This is arguably Donburiya's most significant highlight. Customers consistently praise the food as "deliciously well-priced authentic Japanese food," making it an exceptional value, "esp for the neighbourhood" of Midtown West. This affordability combined with authenticity is a major draw.

  • Fantastic & Consistent Quality: Despite the extensive menu, the dishes ordered have been "consistently fantastic." This reliability ensures that diners can expect a high-quality meal every time they visit.

  • Standout Oroshi Tonkatsu Set: The Oroshi Tonkatsu set is particularly lauded. The katsu itself is described as "so yummy with a wonderful texture (fried to a good balance of not being too oily or soggy)." The generous portion including soup and salad, and the delightful "taste of oroshi in the light dashi broth," make it a highly recommended dish.

  • Exceptional Donburi Options: The Sukiyaki donburi is highlighted as a "particular favourite," praised for its "sweet flavour" perfectly paired with "tender sliced beef," and a "good assortment of tofu, veggies, and egg for a very well balanced dish." The Yakiniku don is also noted as "yummy too – not too salty, beef savoury and well-cooked, and the rice/sauce combo complemented everything nicely." These rice bowls are a core strength.

  • Nice Izakaya Vibe & Spacious Seating: The restaurant offers a "very nice izakaya vibe" that contributes to a pleasant dining atmosphere. Crucially, the "space is large enough that I have never had to wait for a table," a rare and highly appreciated feature in densely packed NYC eateries.

  • Extensive Menu Variety: With a "pretty long" menu covering various donburi, katsu, curries, ramen, and appetizers, Donburiya caters to diverse tastes and preferences, ensuring there's something for everyone, even for repeat visits.

  • Late-Night Hours: A significant convenience, especially for Midtown, is that Donburiya offers late-night dining options on certain days (until 2:30 AM), making it a go-to spot for delicious Japanese food when many other establishments are closed.

Promotions or Special Offers

Donburiya is recognized for its overall excellent price point, offering "cheap and good Japanese food" that already provides significant value for New Yorkers. While formal "promotions" in the sense of discounts or limited-time deals aren't explicitly detailed in customer reviews, the structure of their menu and services inherently offers benefits that function similarly to special offers.

  • Lunch Specials/Sets: Donburiya has a "nice lunch menu" with various "Lunch Donburi Set" options, typically including the main dish (like Yakiniku Don, Oyako Don, Katsu Don, Sukiyaki Don) along with salad and miso soup. These sets are competitively priced (e.g., Yakiniku Don at $16.50 for lunch, compared to potentially higher dinner prices), making them a great value for midday diners.

  • Value for Money: The consistent feedback highlights the "very solid" price point, especially considering the Midtown location. This inherent affordability for authentic and high-quality Japanese comfort food could be considered a perpetual "special offer" compared to many other Japanese restaurants in the city.

  • Daily/Handwritten Specials: The presence of a "cute handwritten menu of specials" suggests that Donburiya frequently offers unique or seasonal dishes. While not necessarily discounted, these provide new culinary experiences and can be seen as an ongoing benefit for regulars.

Regarding the "no-tip restaurant" policy mentioned by one reviewer, there seems to be some inconsistency or change in practice. While some older references might suggest a no-tip policy, a more recent review expresses concern that this "may no longer be the case." For the most accurate and up-to-date information on pricing, lunch specials, or any current policies, it is always best for locals to check Donburiya's official website, their online ordering platforms (like Seamless or Grubhub), or to call the restaurant directly.
