Halves Boiling Pot + Grill | Japanese Hotpot Shabu + Yakiniku BBQ offers a unique and interactive dining experience centered around two popular Japanese culinary styles.
Dine-In Experience: The core offering is a hands-on, DIY dining experience where each table is equipped with a hotpot for Shabu Shabu and a smokeless BBQ grill for Yakiniku. This allows diners to cook their own meats, vegetables, and noodles to their preferred doneness. The ambiance is generally described as great, and while servers are attentive, some may be a "bit too introverted," suggesting a focus on the self-cooking experience. The atmosphere is designed for enjoyment and interaction.
Combined Shabu Shabu & Yakiniku (The "Halves" Combo): This is the restaurant's signature and best-selling service. It allows patrons to enjoy both hotpot and grilling simultaneously. Customers choose two tender meat selections (e.g., American Wagyu for boiling, Angus Short Rib for grilling), fresh vegetables, and noodles in a choice of savory broths (Miso, Tonkotsu, Chinese Spicy, Tomato). This unique combination offers a diverse culinary adventure in a single meal.
A La Carte Shabu Shabu and Yakiniku: For those who prefer just one style of cooking, Halves also offers dedicated Shabu Shabu and Yakiniku options. Diners can select from various premium meats by the pound, including:
- Shabu Shabu Meats: Angus Cut, All Natural American Wagyu, USDA Prime Angus Ribeye, Creekstone Prime Short Rib, Beef Toro, Premium Pork Butabara, Wild Caught Gulf Shrimp, and limited availability Miyazaki A5 Wagyu.
- Yakiniku / Grill Meats: Angus Short Rib, Double Ranch Prime Ribeye, Creekstone Prime Short Rib, Premium Pork Butabara, Premium Beef Tongue, Cold Water Lobster Tail, and limited availability Miyazaki A5 Wagyu.
Broth and Sauce Customization: Diners can choose their preferred broth for Shabu Shabu (Miso, Tonkotsu, Chinese Spicy, Tomato) and are provided with various dipping sauces, including house-made BBQ sauce (for grill items), house-made sesame sauce (for shabu), and ponzu sauce. This customization allows for a personalized flavor profile.
Appetizers and Side Dishes: The menu includes a selection of appetizers such as Edamame, Japanese Fried Chicken, Gyoza, Japanese Sausage, Kimchi, and Takoyaki, providing delicious starters or complementary dishes.
Beverage Menu: Halves offers a "decent beverage menu" including both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. This includes sake, wine, and a selection of craft beers, allowing patrons to pair their meal with their preferred drink.
Online Ordering/Takeout: While the primary experience is dine-in, Halves does facilitate takeout. Customers can view their menu online, and their presence on platforms like DoorDash suggests options for ordering for pickup or delivery, although the full interactive experience is for dine-in.
Halves Boiling Pot + Grill | Japanese Hotpot Shabu + Yakiniku BBQ stands out in the Foothill Ranch dining scene due to its unique concept and several compelling features.
"Best of Both Worlds" Concept (Shabu Shabu + Yakiniku): This is the restaurant's defining feature. Halves uniquely combines the immersive hotpot experience of Shabu Shabu with the interactive grilling of Yakiniku BBQ at the same table. This allows diners to choose their preferred cooking method or enjoy both simultaneously, offering a truly customizable and engaging meal. This dual offering is a significant differentiator in the Japanese dining landscape.
DIY Dining Experience: The hands-on nature of cooking your own food at the table is a major highlight. This interactive approach makes dining at Halves a fun and memorable activity, perfect for groups, families, or anyone who enjoys being involved in their meal preparation.
Premium Meat Selections: Halves offers high-quality meat choices, including American Wagyu, Angus Short Rib, USDA Prime Angus Ribeye, Creekstone Prime Short Rib, and even limited availability Miyazaki A5 Wagyu. This commitment to premium ingredients ensures tender, flavorful results whether boiled in broth or grilled.
Customizable Broths and Sauces: Diners can select from various savory broths (Miso, Tonkotsu, Chinese Spicy, Tomato) for their shabu shabu. Additionally, a range of dipping sauces, including house-made BBQ sauce and a creamy sesame dipping sauce, allows for further customization of flavors to suit individual preferences. While the ponzu sauce was noted as "too sour" by one reviewer, the variety generally allows for personalized taste experiences.
Smokeless BBQ Grills: The presence of smokeless BBQ grills on the tables is a significant comfort feature, ensuring that diners can enjoy the grilling experience without excessive smoke or lingering odors on their clothes.
Convenient Location with Ample Parking: Situated in a plaza at a major intersection, Halves benefits from "plenty of parking," which is a considerable convenience in Orange County. This makes the restaurant easily accessible and reduces potential stress associated with dining out.
Diverse Beverage Menu: Beyond food, Halves offers a "decent beverage menu" that includes sake, wine, and craft beers, allowing patrons to pair their interactive meal with a wide selection of drinks.
While specific, constantly advertised promotions for Halves Boiling Pot + Grill are best confirmed directly with the restaurant, they do engage in various offers and have a pricing structure that can be considered a form of special.
The "Halves" Best Seller Combo: This signature offering, which allows diners to enjoy both Shabu Shabu and Yakiniku, is essentially a bundled deal that provides a comprehensive experience. While priced at $42.50 before tax and tip (as noted in an older review, current price should be verified), it offers two premium meat selections along with vegetables and noodles, providing significant value for a unique dual-cooking experience.
Groupon Deals: Halves has been featured on Groupon, offering deals such as "$15 For $30 Worth Of Japanese Dining." Such promotions are excellent opportunities for new customers to try the restaurant at a reduced cost and for regulars to enjoy savings. These deals often have specific terms (e.g., "Dine in only; not valid for take-out," "Limit 1 certificate per table per visit"), so checking the current terms on Groupon is essential.
Loyalty Programs / Mailing List: Their website mentions joining a "Mailing List," which is a common way for restaurants to offer exclusive discounts, birthday specials, or updates on new menu items to their loyal customers. Signing up could provide access to future promotions.
Beverage Specials: While not explicitly detailed, restaurants with a "decent beverage menu" (including craft beers) sometimes offer happy hour specials on drinks during off-peak hours.

Halves Boiling Pot + Grill | Japanese Hotpot Shabu + Yakiniku BBQ Reviews
It’s the best of both worlds when you can combine shabu shabu and teppan grill! Halves is located in a plaza at the intersection of Auto Center Drive and Towne Center Drive in Foothill Ranch. There is plenty of parking except during peak hours. Our servers were attentive but also a bit too introverted.Halves offers a decent beverage menu, whether you like your drink leaded or not. Besides sake and wine, they also carry craft beers so of course I had to try one on my recent visit. For dinner, it’s a no-brainer to go with their best seller which they coincidentally named the “Halves”. Enjoy two tender meat selections of your choice (I opted to boil the American Wagyu and grill the Angus Short Rib), fresh vegetables, and noodles in a savory broth of your choosing while grilling premium ingredients on their smokeless bbq grill. I always appreciate when you can customize what you’re eating. I enjoyed the bbq dipping sauce for items off the grill and the sesame dipping sauce for the shabu, but the ponzu sauce was disappointing and too sour. If you enjoy DIY dining, shabu shabu, Yakiniku or both, then you def I recommend paying a visit to Halves!
Apr 09, 2025 · Alan SungFor the money, I recommend going to another place for hotpot. This is 42.5 dollars before tip and tax which is fine, but I also never had a tonkustu broth being so foamy and overflow when the heat is up, but then when the fire is down, it takes 5 mins to broil up which is frustrating to wait. However, in the end the waiter helped find the right temperature that cooks fast . But the portion is just small and veggies are not free refill
Dec 31, 2024 · Sunny JinThe owner needs to hire more staff. We come here all the time and they have 1-2 waiters for the entire restaurant. The food is good however, the wait time takes away from the experience. I see the waiters struggling and running around due to the limited staff they have. A message to the owner, Jack, you can’t just think about your pocket all the time. Hire more staff and don’t be greedy. It took you a whole years to buy a new working tv for the bar. Shame shame
Apr 28, 2025 · shannon armanA little out of the way if you live around Irvine like me, but the food quality was worth the drive. We went around 8pm on a Saturday evening, was not crowded and we got seated immediately.Went with an order of halves (beef toro + 3-meat-combo), satisfied with the meat quality as well as portion.Only slight complaint was that my friend found a fly in her soup after she's thrown in all her meat, likely from one of the veggies. When she told the server about this, they were quite stingy about replacing the whole meat plate...Overall positive experience, recommend.Halves
Apr 27, 2024 · Bethany PerkinsThe food at halves is wonderful: high quality meats, fresh veggies. The atmosphere leaves something to be desired for the price though. I would like to go back again, but it’s date night menu prices, but doesn’t have a nice restaurant feel. I wish they would make it more comfortable, with comfortable seating, etc. we spent $120 (including tip) on 2 people, with the halves menu, and 1 drink each.
