Izakaya Fishtown

Sushi restaurant ★4.0·$$

1832 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125, USA

4.0
I’m really sad to write this because I live down the block and have gone here numerous times in the last two years but the quality of the food is diminishing. Every time I go to/get food from izakaya the dishes come out differently. There seems to be no quality control and people literally put different ingredients in the meals, sometimes they add spicy mayo to things that don’t even have it on the menu (which is also an allergen). They lost their liquor license a few months ago and the vibe inside is dull, I would go there to get drinks and enjoy the ambiance but with a whole wall of empty shelves it’s pretty dismal. Most recently I ordered two dishes that I get very frequently, lil fried squids and a salmon donburi bowl. The salmon (usually nice chunks, instead is little shredded bits, like lunch meat almost. It looks like someone ripped it up with their hands instead of slicing it? And the lil squids are majority batter, and there is also just some random calamari pieces thrown in which I’ve never seen, maybe they ran out of squids? I want them to do well again, but it seems like things are only getting worse. Sorry guys, I’m a little frustrated about it. - Tori

Izakaya Fishtown Introduce

For those of us in Philadelphia, particularly in the dynamic Fishtown area, Izakaya Fishtown has been a familiar name for Japanese cuisine. Situated on Frankford Avenue, this establishment has aimed to offer a variety of Japanese dishes, often with a focus on sushi, ramen, and a selection of small plates, traditionally associated with an "izakaya" style of casual dining. It's the kind of neighborhood spot that many locals might frequent for a convenient meal.

Izakaya Fishtown has a history of being a go-to for residents seeking Japanese flavors in a relaxed setting. Past reviews highlight dishes like "phenomenal" duck bao buns and consistently good "Spicy Tuna Rice Crisps." The restaurant has been noted for its "BYOB" policy, which is a popular feature among Philadelphia diners, allowing patrons to bring their own alcoholic beverages. While recent customer feedback has indicated some evolving challenges regarding consistency in food preparation and changes in its operating status, the core offerings of sushi, ramen, and small plates remain central to its identity. For those in Fishtown, it aims to provide a local and accessible option for Japanese fare, even if recent experiences suggest it may be undergoing some transitions.

Location and Accessibility

Izakaya Fishtown is located at 1832 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125, USA. This address places it in the heart of Fishtown, one of Philadelphia's most popular and rapidly developing neighborhoods. Frankford Avenue is a bustling corridor known for its diverse array of restaurants, boutiques, and artistic venues.

The restaurant's location offers generally good accessibility for Philadelphia residents. It's often described as being "down the block" for many in the immediate area, making it a convenient walk for locals. For those using public transportation, Frankford Avenue is well-served by SEPTA bus routes. Additionally, the Girard Avenue El station (Market-Frankford Line) is within reasonable walking distance, providing easy access from other parts of the city. While street parking in Fishtown can sometimes be competitive, particularly during peak hours, its central location within the neighborhood means it's usually reachable without significant hassle for most Philadelphians.

Services Offered

Izakaya Fishtown offers a menu that typically includes a range of Japanese comfort foods and sushi, catering to both dine-in and takeout preferences.

  • Dine-In Service: The restaurant provides a casual setting for dining, with a focus on a relaxed atmosphere. While one review notes that the "vibe inside is dull" currently, it has historically aimed for a pleasant interior environment.

  • Sushi and Hand Rolls: The menu includes a variety of sushi rolls such as Spicy Tuna Roll, Salmon Avocado Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, California Roll, Philly Roll, and specialty rolls like Tiny Dancer Roll and Fire Fighter Roll. Hand rolls are also available, including O-Toro + Scallop Hand Roll and Spicy Salmon Avocado Hand Roll.

  • A La Carte Sushi & Sashimi: Nigiri and sashimi options like Tuna, O Toro (High Fatty Tuna), Salmon, and Yellowtail are offered, typically in 2-piece servings.

  • Ramen: While not extensively detailed in recent reviews, ramen has been a part of their menu, contributing to their "ramen" designation. Historically, Japanese comfort food like "Kawasaki-style chicken ramen and soupless tantan mazemen" were mentioned.

  • Small Plates and Appetizers: A diverse selection of small plates is available, including popular items like Chicken Yakitori, Pork Gyoza, Spicy Tuna Rice Crisps, Tori Karaage (Japanese style boneless fried chicken), Chashu Bao, Snow Crab Wanton Tacos, and Hamachi Crudo.

  • Hibachi Fried Rice: Offerings include Hibachi Fried Rice with Veggie or Chicken options.

  • BYOB Policy: The restaurant operates as a BYOB establishment, allowing customers to bring their own alcoholic beverages to accompany their meal. This is a significant convenience for many diners, with suggestions to visit a nearby winery for pairings.

  • Happy Hour: The restaurant has historically offered happy hour specials, including deals on food items.

Features / Highlights

Izakaya Fishtown has several notable features that have defined its presence in the Philadelphia dining scene, though some aspects have been subject to recent changes:

  • Broad Japanese Menu: The restaurant offers a wide array of Japanese dishes beyond just sushi, including a variety of small plates (izakaya style), ramen, and hibachi fried rice, catering to diverse tastes.

  • BYOB Convenience: A significant highlight for many Philadelphia diners is the BYOB policy, which allows patrons to bring their own alcoholic beverages, often enhancing the dining experience and offering cost savings. The suggestion to visit a nearby winery is an added convenience for this.

  • Casual Neighborhood Vibe: Historically, Izakaya Fishtown has been perceived as a "chill spot" and a "neighborhood bar and grill," aiming for a relaxed atmosphere suitable for a casual meal.

  • Popular Small Plates: Dishes like the "phenomenal" duck bao buns and "Spicy Tuna Rice Crisps" have been highlighted as standout items, showcasing a creative approach to Japanese appetizers.

  • Accessibility: Its location on Frankford Avenue in Fishtown, with proximity to public transportation, makes it easily accessible for a wide range of local residents.

  • Online Ordering and Delivery: The availability of online ordering and delivery services through multiple platforms provides convenience for those who prefer to dine at home.

It is important for prospective diners to note that recent customer feedback indicates challenges with food consistency ("dishes come out differently," "no quality control"), potential changes in ingredient use ("little shredded bits" of salmon instead of chunks), and a perceived shift in ambiance due to changes in its liquor license status (described as having a "dull" vibe with "a whole wall of empty shelves").

Promotions or Special Offers

Izakaya Fishtown has historically offered promotions that cater to its casual dining model. Based on available information, here's what Philadelphia residents might typically expect or have seen in the past:

  • Happy Hour: The restaurant has offered happy hour specials. One review explicitly mentions going "during Happy Hour," suggesting that discounted food items or special deals might be available during certain hours.

  • Lunch Specials: Many Japanese restaurants offer specific lunch menus or bento box deals, and while not explicitly detailed in recent reviews for Izakaya Fishtown, it's a common practice for restaurants of this type to attract midday diners.

  • BYOB Convenience: While not a direct "promotion," the BYOB policy acts as a significant cost-saving benefit for customers, allowing them to enjoy their preferred beverages without restaurant markups. The suggestion to visit a nearby winery complements this.

  • Online Ordering Deals: Restaurants often run exclusive promotions through their direct online ordering systems or via third-party delivery platforms (like DoorDash, Grubhub, Uber Eats). These can include discounts on orders, free delivery for a minimum spend, or loyalty rewards.

Given some of the recent feedback regarding operational changes, it would be advisable for interested Philadelphians to contact Izakaya Fishtown directly via phone or check their current online ordering platforms for the most up-to-date information on any active promotions or special offers before visiting.

Conclusion: Why Izakaya Fishtown is Suitable for Locals

For Philadelphia locals, particularly those residing in or frequenting the vibrant Fishtown neighborhood, Izakaya Fishtown presents itself as a conveniently located option for Japanese cuisine. Its suitability largely stems from its accessible location, varied menu, and the flexibility it has historically offered to diners.

The restaurant’s position on Frankford Avenue, a bustling commercial and residential corridor, makes it a highly convenient choice for many in the community. Being "down the block" for numerous residents, and easily reachable by public transport, enhances its appeal as a spontaneous or regular dining spot. This geographical accessibility is a significant factor for city dwellers who value ease of access to local eateries.

Furthermore, Izakaya Fishtown offers a broad spectrum of Japanese dishes, from various sushi rolls and sashimi to comforting ramen and a selection of popular small plates like duck bao buns and crispy rice. This diverse menu aims to cater to a range of preferences, whether someone is craving classic sushi or a more substantial cooked dish. The BYOB policy also adds considerable value, allowing patrons to personalize their dining experience by bringing their preferred beverages, which is a beloved feature among many Philadelphia restaurants.

However, it's important for locals to consider recent feedback that points to inconsistencies in food quality and preparation, as well as a changed atmosphere due to the absence of a liquor license. While these issues have been raised by some customers, the fundamental offerings and the convenience of its location might still make it a viable option for those prioritizing accessibility and a casual Japanese meal. For those who live nearby and are familiar with its past offerings, there might be a hope for improvement and a return to consistent quality. For new visitors, it would be wise to manage expectations regarding consistency and atmosphere based on recent public comments. In essence, Izakaya Fishtown remains a local Japanese eatery on the map for Philadelphians, offering a range of Japanese dishes in a very accessible Fishtown location.
