Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant Introduce
For those of us living in California, especially in the vibrant East Bay, the search for truly fresh and consistently delicious Japanese cuisine often leads to hidden gems. One such establishment that has garnered a loyal following for its high-quality offerings is Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant. While you might not find a traditional storefront, Matsuyama operates as a popular ghost kitchen, making it a go-to spot for many Oakland locals seeking exceptional sushi, sashimi, and specialty rolls delivered right to their door. It’s the kind of place that, once discovered, often becomes an immediate staple in your dining rotation.
Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant has built its reputation on the cornerstone of incredibly fresh fish and a menu that consistently delivers on flavor. Many patrons rave about the quality of their sashimi, describing it as "delicious and tender," and their various rolls, with the Popcorn Shrimp Roll often singled out as an "insane" must-try. This focus on the core elements of Japanese cuisine – the quality of the ingredients and the skilled preparation – is what truly sets Matsuyama apart in a competitive culinary landscape.
Operating as a ghost kitchen means Matsuyama is perfectly aligned with the modern Californian lifestyle, emphasizing convenience without compromising on quality. It’s ideal for those busy weeknights when you crave restaurant-quality Japanese food without the need to dine out. For local residents, Matsuyama represents a reliable source of fresh and expertly prepared Japanese dishes, making it a valuable addition to Oakland's diverse food scene.
Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant operates from 5333 Adeline St, Oakland, CA 94608, USA. As a ghost kitchen, its physical location is primarily for food preparation and dispatch, rather than for a traditional dine-in experience. This business model is perfectly suited for the modern Californian consumer who often prioritizes convenience and delivery services.
While there isn't a customer-facing storefront to visit for atmosphere, the Adeline Street location places Matsuyama strategically within Oakland. This area offers good logistical access for delivery services reaching various neighborhoods across the city, including Rockridge, Temescal, and Emeryville. For those living or working in these bustling East Bay areas, ordering from Matsuyama means receiving fresh Japanese cuisine with relative ease.
Accessibility for drivers and delivery personnel is generally good in this commercial and industrial part of Oakland, ensuring that orders can be picked up and dispatched efficiently. While customers won't be visiting the premises to eat, the location is optimized for smooth operation, which translates to timely delivery of your favorite sushi and sashimi right to your home or office in California. This behind-the-scenes efficiency is crucial for a ghost kitchen's success and contributes to the reliable service that Matsuyama is known for.
Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant, operating as a ghost kitchen, focuses on streamlined services to deliver high-quality Japanese cuisine directly to its customers in California. Their primary services include:
Online Ordering: Customers can easily place orders through various popular food delivery platforms. This is the main channel for engaging with Matsuyama's menu.
Food Delivery: As a ghost kitchen, delivery is the cornerstone of their business. Matsuyama partners with third-party delivery services to ensure that their fresh sushi, sashimi, and rolls reach customers' homes or offices efficiently.
Takeout/Pickup (Limited): While the primary model is delivery, direct pickup might be available in some instances, though customers should confirm this when ordering as it's not their main focus.
Extensive Menu of Japanese Dishes: Matsuyama offers a wide selection of Japanese favorites, including various sushi rolls, sashimi, and specialty items, catering to diverse tastes.
Customization (where possible): While not explicitly stated, online ordering platforms often allow for certain modifications to dishes, offering a degree of customization for dietary preferences.
Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant has cultivated a strong reputation among Oakland locals, thanks to several distinguishing features:
Exceptional Fish Freshness: This is arguably Matsuyama’s most celebrated attribute. Customers consistently rave that the "fish is SO fresh," highlighting the restaurant's commitment to sourcing high-quality ingredients for its sushi and sashimi. This freshness is key to the delicious and tender quality of their offerings.
Delicious & Tender Sashimi: Many reviews specifically call out the sashimi as "delicious and tender," often noting that it's a stand-alone highlight on their menu. This indicates a high level of skill in selecting and preparing their raw fish.
Signature Popcorn Shrimp Roll: This specialty roll is frequently mentioned as a fan favorite, described as "insane" and praised for its "torched flavor." It's a must-try for new and returning customers alike.
Tasty Specialty Rolls: Beyond the Popcorn Shrimp Roll, other rolls like the Sakekawa (salmon skin) and Negihama (yellowtail and green onion) rolls are also highlighted as "tasty," showcasing a consistent quality across their rolled offerings.
Reliable and Timely Service: Despite operating as a ghost kitchen, orders "come in a timely manner," which is a crucial feature for a delivery-focused business. This reliability contributes significantly to customer satisfaction.
Generous "Goodies" in Orders: Some delighted customers mention that Matsuyama sometimes "pack some goodies in the sashimi" or other orders. This small, unexpected bonus adds to the positive experience and makes customers feel valued.
Consistent Go-To Spot for Locals: Many reviews indicate that Matsuyama has become a regular "go to sushi spot" for repeat customers, demonstrating strong customer loyalty based on consistent quality and satisfaction.
Focus on Quality Over Atmosphere: As a ghost kitchen, the focus is entirely on the food. While some customers express a wish for a physical restaurant, the current model allows Matsuyama to dedicate all resources to ingredient quality and preparation, which directly benefits the end product.
As a ghost kitchen, Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant typically leverages online platforms for its promotions and special offers, rather than in-store deals. For locals in California looking to enjoy their fresh sushi and sashimi, here’s how to look for potential savings and added value:
Firstly, it's always recommended to check the specific food delivery apps they partner with, such as Uber Eats, DoorDash, Postmates, or Grubhub. These platforms frequently offer their own promotions, which can include:
First-Time User Discounts: If you're new to a particular delivery app, you might find a percentage off your first order or a set dollar amount discount.
Free Delivery Offers: Often, apps will waive delivery fees for orders over a certain amount or as a general promotion for specific restaurants.
Bundled Deals: Occasionally, the apps might feature special combos or bundles from Matsuyama at a slightly reduced price, encouraging larger orders.
Seasonal or Holiday Promotions: Keep an eye out for special offers tied to holidays or specific seasons, which delivery platforms might run in conjunction with popular restaurants.
Secondly, while not a direct "promotion," some customer reviews mention that Matsuyama "sometimes they pack some goodies in the sashimi." These unexpected additions, whether it's an extra piece of fish or a small side, serve as a delightful bonus for loyal customers and enhance the perception of value. While not a guaranteed promotion, it's a pleasant surprise that adds to the overall positive experience.
Since Matsuyama doesn't have a traditional storefront, direct mailers or in-store signage for promotions are not applicable. Therefore, for the most up-to-date information on any special offers, consulting the specific delivery app you plan to use is the best approach. This ensures you're getting the most current deals available for their fresh and delicious Japanese cuisine.

Their phone lines are available to assist with customer service needs related to their offerings.

Its operation as a ghost kitchen directly addresses the modern lifestyle, where convenience and quality takeout are highly valued. In a region known for its appreciation of fresh, high-quality ingredients, Matsuyama consistently delivers, with customers frequently lauding the "SO fresh" fish and "delicious and tender" sashimi. It's truly become a "go to sushi spot" for many, and for good reason.

Fish is SO fresh, order comes in a timely manner, and sometimes they pack some goodies in the sashimi. Can’t really speak to atmosphere with it being a ghost kitchen but I hope they someday can have a lil restaurant ❤️Popcorn shrimp role is insane, love that torched flavor 😍 The sakekawa and negihama roll are tasty. Their sashimi is delicious and tender. Honestly can’t go wrong. Thanks for all you do, keep cookin please!!Probably ordering again tonight…
Jun 06, 2024 · Sasha ReynoldsI’m not sure if the sushi chef is out sick or someone was learning sushi but I’m confused and disappointed this evening. The avocado roll was poorly made (uneven rice, loosely rolled & uneven cuts). No biggie. However, the vegetable tempura rolls - ngl my mouth did gape open when I opened the container.First thing I noticed is what is supposed to be avocado slices across the top of the roll was a teeny tiny amount of MASHED avocado, including finger press points. The roll was missing carrot and sweet potato, the bottom 1/3 of the roll was soaked in a sauce I’d never gotten before and 2 mysterious blobs of green onion smushed into 2 spots. It didn’t at all taste like the roll should, and has the last two prior times I’ve ordered it, surely due to missing carrot, missing sweet potato, minuscule avocado and soggy from sauce. Also, the surprise green onion and sauce is not okay.If I had received these rolls this way my first order I’d never have ordered from here again. I worked in a Japanese sushi bar for years and I’m really stunned someone felt it was okay to send this out. The California rolls were fine and look like they were definitely made by someone else. It was absolutely unacceptable to send out the veg tempura rolls the way they did.
Mar 28, 2023 · Jenna KOrdered from DoorDash. Sushi and handrolls were extremely sour! Way too much vinegar. I suspect that the fish is not fresh enough so they add extra vinegar to cover it up!
Mar 13, 2025 · D YAdding a review because I noticed this place had a much lower rating than I would give🥲I order door dash from them often and have always been happy with the food. I have closer places to my house but I like to order from here because it just tastes better for some reason! Nigiri is my favorite. Very fresh and a good portion.
Nov 08, 2024 · Alina EnoiuThe sushi here is pretty bad. The salmon tasted fresh but it wasnt that good. The smelt roe was nasty. The tuna seemed to have spines.
