the food was fine but the service was actually close to the worst thing i’ve had. i think it was just our waitress tbh, everyone else seemed like they were hustling. we had to ask so many times to even get water refills, the food took foreverrrr, and getting the check even took ages and a lot of attempts to get her attention.apparently it’s cash only which we did not know about. idk if the waiter even knew that bc she literally picked up our check with the card only to come back to tell us no card (other than amex)???great vibes though - Cindy Hao

What is worth choosing

Choosing Omen Azen is a decision to step into a piece of Japanese culinary history in New York. The restaurant's legacy, being the second oldest Japanese restaurant in the city, speaks to its enduring quality and appeal. What makes Omen Azen truly worth choosing is its focus on honest, authentic Japanese cuisine beyond the standard sushi fare. While our sashimi selection is fresh and high-quality, the signature Omen udon noodles, served in a homemade dashi broth, are a must-try. This dish embodies the heart of our kitchen's philosophy and is a unique experience you won't find at many other Japanese spots in the city. The Black Codfish and Spicy Salmon Teriyaki are also highly recommended for their rich and distinct flavors.

The atmosphere is a key part of the charm. It's a place that attracts a sophisticated and creative crowd, yet it maintains a friendly and unpretentious vibe. The cozy and intimate setting makes it a great choice for a quiet dinner date or a peaceful solo meal where you can truly appreciate the food. The staff's warmth and hospitality are consistently praised, and they make every effort to ensure a pleasant experience. While some diners may find the food to be on the saltier side, this is a matter of personal taste and can be balanced with our refreshing beverages. The quality and depth of the flavors, particularly in the soups and noodles, are what make the meal a memorable one.

Another great reason to visit is our unique offerings, like the Uni Shot and Kobe Beef Shabu Shabu, which showcase a variety of authentic Japanese delicacies. The menu changes seven times a year to reflect the seasons, ensuring that there is always something new and exciting to try. Omen Azen is a place that values tradition and quality over trendiness, and this is evident in every detail, from the decor to the carefully prepared dishes. For a New Yorker who is looking for a genuine, high-quality, and peaceful Japanese dining experience that goes beyond the ordinary, Omen Azen is an exceptional choice. It’s an anti-scene restaurant that is celebrated for its substance, not just its style, and it's a truly special find in the city.
