Present Tense Introduce
In the vibrant culinary landscape of Nashville, Tennessee, Present Tense emerges as a distinctive and highly-regarded Japanese restaurant, offering a modern izakaya-style dining experience. Situated at 301 Hart St, Nashville, TN 37210, this establishment, under the guidance of Chef/Owner Ryan Costanza and GM/Owner Rick Margaritov, masterfully blends traditional Japanese culinary artistry with contemporary global influences. For local users utilizing platforms such as "Doctor Near Me" to find services and goods that enhance their well-being, Present Tense provides a complementary offering: a dining experience that caters to both physical nourishment and sensory delight, promoting a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle.
The concept behind Present Tense is rooted in the "izakaya" tradition – a casual Japanese pub or restaurant specializing in small, shareable plates and beverages, particularly sake. However, Present Tense elevates this concept with a focus on world-class ingredients, meticulous preparation using Japanese charcoal, and a nuanced approach to fermentation and flavor. This dedication to quality and thoughtful composition makes it an excellent choice for those who appreciate the finer details of cuisine, much like how "Doctor Near Me" assists users in finding highly qualified and detail-oriented healthcare providers.
The moment you step into Present Tense, you are greeted by an atmosphere designed to engage the senses and provide a respite from the outside world. The interior is described as minimalist and modern, yet warm and inviting, adorned with ample greenery. It boasts an "industrial zen vibe" and a carefully curated soundtrack of lo-fi hip-hop, contributing to a relaxed yet sophisticated setting. Exposed brick subtly peeking through stucco walls adds a touch of antiquity, while intentionally mismatched chandeliers contribute to a charming and unique aesthetic. This thoughtful design creates an uncrowded dining room, fostering an intimate experience suitable for small groups. The overall intention is to cultivate an environment where guests can truly "live in the present tense," leaving behind the day's worries and fully immersing themselves in the culinary journey. This emphasis on a calming and engaging environment mirrors the desire for comfort and positive experience sought by individuals when searching for "Doctor Near Me" services, where a pleasant and reassuring atmosphere can contribute to overall well-being.
Present Tense offers a range of services designed to enhance the dining experience. Beyond the main dining room, a notable feature is the 6-seat omakase counter. Here, guests can indulge in a 12-course (sometimes described as 16-course) tasting menu, a 2-hour experience paired with expertly selected wine and sake. This intimate setting allows for a deeper exploration of Chef Costanza’s culinary vision and provides an educational opportunity, particularly with the guidance of GM/Owner Rick Margaritov, a seasoned professional in hospitality and beverage. This personalized and curated experience, similar to a specialized consultation found through "Doctor Near Me" for a particular health concern, emphasizes expert guidance and tailored attention.
The staff at Present Tense is renowned for their exceptional service. They are consistently described as friendly, welcoming, and highly knowledgeable about the menu and beverage offerings. Guests have praised their patience and willingness to guide diners through the extensive sake and natural wine lists, suggesting perfect pairings to complement the dishes. This attentive and informed service ensures a smooth and enjoyable dining journey, akin to the reassuring and professional care expected from top medical practitioners found via "Doctor Near Me."
Present Tense also offers in-house catering and beverage services, making it a viable option for special events. For added convenience, takeout and third-party delivery options are available, including through platforms like Postmates and DoorDash. Additionally, for guests of the Placemakr building where it is located, room service breakfast packages are offered, featuring items like breakfast burritos and fresh fruit, demonstrating their commitment to comprehensive hospitality.
The menu at Present Tense is a testament to Chef Costanza's diverse culinary background, blending his Sicilian and Sardinian heritage with extensive experience cooking in Asia. The one-page menu is thoughtfully divided, featuring sections like "Charcoal Grill & Yakitori," "Raw Bar," "Izakaya Staples," and "Vegetables," alongside "Present Tense Classics."

Japanese Sweet Potato: A vegetarian highlight, served with lovage, cream, and bottarga, or sometimes with cream, bonito, and chili crisp.
House-made Soft Serve: Featuring flavors like white sesame miso and other rotating options, providing a unique and satisfying dessert experience.
Beyond the food, Present Tense is recognized for its deep sake list, featuring their own brand, Pure Land Sake, crafted in Kyoto. They also offer a selection of natural wines and esoteric, minimalist cocktails. This emphasis on a diverse and high-quality beverage program further enhances the dining experience, allowing for perfect pairings and exploration of new flavors. The restaurant’s commitment to sourcing world-class ingredients, evident in dishes like the Hiramasa Sashimi (yellowtail kingfish) and Joyce Farms chicken thighs for yakitori, ensures an unparalleled culinary experience.
Present Tense is a well-regarded establishment, having been named among the "N.Y. Times Best Restaurants in Nashville" and "Resy Best Dining Experiences in America 2024." While specific ongoing promotions like happy hour deals are not widely advertised, their consistent recognition speaks to the high value and quality of their offering. They do offer special prix fixe menus for holidays like Valentine's Day, and opportunities for investors to share in their success. The restaurant's philosophy of "living in the present tense" serves as an overarching promotion, inviting guests to savor the moment and enjoy a unique culinary escape.
For those searching for "Doctor Near Me," it is worth noting that Present Tense, while a dining establishment, indirectly contributes to the overall well-being and lifestyle of the local community by providing a refined and enjoyable social experience. Present Tense Reviews
Amazing dinner experience. We tried an assortment of tapas dishes, of which the kanpachi and scallops were our favorite. The chef and owner came out to greet us personally, and gave us salmon with caviar and matcha/miso ice cream on the house. Would definitely come back next time I visit Nashville!

Mar 10, 2025 · Julia TurnerI went to Present Tense with a friend for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I was blown away at the quality and presentation of everything we ordered as well as the service! We enjoyed: Karaage Fried Chicken, Yellowtail Hand Roll, Chicken Thigh Yakitori, A5 Wagyu Strip Skewer, Squid Ink Pasta, Orchid Mist (cocktail), Habanero Gold (cocktail), Blood Orange Soft Serve and Japanese Chocolate Mousse. Plus, they greet you with complimentary popcorn which I thought was so fun! I'm not exaggerating when I say I absolutely loved everything we tried, but if I had to narrow it down to "must-try" items, I would choose the Karaage Fried Chicken & Japanese Chocolate Mousse. I think about those dishes often haha! Thanks for a lovely experience Present Tense team, I can't wait to come back!
