- Omakase Dining Experience: Sushi Kodawari specializes exclusively in an omakase-style dining experience. This means "I leave it to you," where the chef curates a multi-course menu based on the freshest seasonal ingredients available. It's a journey guided by the chef's expertise.
- Intimate Counter Seating: The restaurant features an intimate 8-seat sushi counter. This limited seating creates a highly personal and exclusive atmosphere, allowing diners to directly interact with the chef and observe the meticulous preparation of each dish.
- Reservation-Only: Due to its intimate nature and high demand, dining at Sushi Kodawari is strictly by reservation only. Guests typically book well in advance for one of the two nightly seatings.
- Multi-Course Tasting Menu: The omakase menu typically consists of approximately 15 courses, with a strong focus on exceptional, seasonal fish, often flown in directly from Japan. This includes a variety of nigiri, sashimi, and sometimes small appetizers (otsumami).
- Beverage Pairings: While patrons may sometimes be able to bring their own (BYOB was offered during soft opening and for specific events, but standard policy may involve a curated selection), the restaurant typically offers a thoughtful selection of sake, wine, and Japanese beers designed to complement the delicate flavors of the sushi courses.
- Educational Interaction: The experience is often described as informative, with the chef explaining the origin of the fish, the preparation techniques, and the best way to enjoy each piece.
- Authentic Edomae-Style Sushi: Sushi Kodawari is inspired by the Edomae tradition of old Tokyo. This style emphasizes aging and preparing fish to enhance its flavor, often using highly acidic, vinegared rice, and serving each piece as a perfect one-bite morsel meant to be eaten immediately.
- Highest Quality, Seasonal Fish: A defining feature is the restaurant's commitment to sourcing the freshest, highest-quality seasonal fish. Ingredients are often flown in daily from premier fish markets in Japan, ensuring a flavor sensation unparalleled in the Kansas City area.
- Intimate and Exclusive Atmosphere: With only 8 seats, the dining experience is incredibly intimate and personal. This allows for direct interaction with Chef Karson Thompson, who meticulously prepares and presents each course.
- Chef-Curated Omakase Menu: The "chef's choice" format allows for a truly unique and evolving menu that showcases the peak of seasonal ingredients and the chef's culinary artistry. No two visits are exactly alike, promising a fresh experience every time.
- Meticulous Preparation and Presentation: Every dish is thoughtfully crafted, from the precision slicing of the fish to the perfect seasoning of the rice (often described as distinct from other places) and the artful plating. Even details like grinding fresh wasabi root are part of the experience.
- Unforgettable Flavors: Customers consistently use superlatives to describe the food, highlighting deep, rich flavors, and a taste sensation not found elsewhere in Kansas City. Standout dishes mentioned include the Shima Aji (striped jack) and an unexpected yet delicious vanilla ice cream paired with aged soy sauce for dessert.
- Designed for Community and Enjoyment: Despite its fine-dining nature, the omakase format encourages a shared experience and communal enjoyment of the meal, often at a slow, luxurious pace.
- Luxurious and Curated Design: The restaurant's interior is intricately curated, featuring elements like a suspended wood ceiling, Hinoki Cypress counters imported from Japan, and antique Japanese screens, creating a serene and authentic backdrop.
Due to the exclusive and high-end nature of an omakase-style restaurant like Sushi Kodawari, traditional "promotions" or "happy hour" specials in the conventional sense are not typically offered. The experience itself is the primary offering, priced to reflect the premium quality of ingredients (often flown in daily from Japan), the specialized culinary skill, and the intimate, personalized service.
However, it's worth noting a couple of points:
- Gift Cards: Sushi Kodawari offers gift cards, which can be an excellent way to share this unique culinary experience with others. A gift card allows recipients to book their omakase journey, making it a thoughtful present for special occasions.
- Reservation Deposit: While not a promotion, they require a deposit per person when booking a reservation, which is then credited towards the final bill. It's important to be aware of their cancellation policy, as cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance may incur a fee equal to the full menu price less any deposit paid.
The value at Sushi Kodawari comes from the unparalleled quality of the food and the exclusive, educational, and immersive dining experience, rather than discounted rates.

Fantastic experience! This was our first time trying this dining style and type of authentic Japanese sushi. Service was fantastic, food was so flavorful beyond expectations. This is NOTHING like the simple sushi you get anywhere else. The deep, rich flavors and passion put into each hand-made piece brought about a flavor sensation not found elsewhere in the Kansas City area. If you are considering trying this place, don’t hesitate and book now!
Apr 18, 2025 · Christopher WebbI was absolutely blown away by this experience. It wasn’t just about eating incredible food—it was about the intention behind every single bite. Each course was thoughtfully crafted and truly unique, creating an unforgettable journey from start to finish. I’ve never had fish and rice this exceptional—nothing else in Kansas City even comes close. This place is a true gem.The standout for me was the Shima Aji, followed closely by the dessert: a beautifully simple vanilla ice cream paired with aged soy sauce—it was unexpected and unforgettable. I can’t recommend this place enough. It’s fun, informative, and will leave your taste buds completely amazed.
Apr 20, 2025 · Rachel FletcherReally great omakase experience in KC! Inviting atmosphere to ask questions while enjoying some great courses. The quality of the fish was superb! Will definitely return!
Apr 26, 2025 · Stephany FFinally an authentic Omakase experience in Kansas City! Chef Carson and Beth are a dynamic duo. The experience felt exclusive yet welcoming. Will definitely be back again later this year!
Mar 02, 2025 · Ben WalnickWe were pleasantly surprised to discover such an outstanding dining experience in Kansas City—one we’d typically expect to find in larger cities like San Francisco, L.A., Chicago, or NYC. While we are more familiar with a traditional Kaiseki dinner, the Omakase selection by Chef Karson was a welcome change, prepared with passion, precision, commitment, and attention to detail—truly living up to its name, "the pursuit of perfection."Upon studying the menu courses, we quickly picked out what we assumed would be our favorites. However, by the end of the evening, our list had been completely reshuffled! While the Uni (Sea Urchin) and the fattier Bluefin Tuna courses (Chutoro and Otoro) made it into our top five, it was the Gindara (Sablefish), Shima Aji (Trevally), and Kasugo (Baby Sea Bream) that truly stole the show. The entire evening was memorable, starting with the Ossetra Chip amuse-bouche and ending with a unique ice cream dessert—an homage to the restaurant's location in the historic Creamery Building, topped with a KitKat, a clever nod to Japanese pop culture ("Kitto Katsu").Beth, who managed beverages and service, was incredibly knowledgeable about the carefully curated drink menu and provided attentive, friendly service with a touch of humor that lightened the atmosphere. We tried two non-alcoholic options—a sparkling white with fruity, citrus notes and a semi-cloudy white, dry and well-balanced. Although the wine list was impressive, we were delighted to see exciting non-alcoholic choices featured prominently—something that should be standard in every fine dining experience. The interior design followed the traditions of clean, minimalist Japanese aesthetics, with natural wood elements and beautifully hand-made ceramic ware—some sourced from a local artist and others crafted in the Imari-ware style. In conclusion, we had a wonderful evening. Chef Karson and his team delivered an experience that surpassed what we had anticipated in every aspect. And yes, we did take a photo with Chef Karson and Beth to commemorate the experience!Thank you—we will definitely be back!
