Tokoharu Introduce
For those of us in New York, especially in the Dutchess County area, finding a reliable and satisfying spot for Japanese cuisine can be a regular quest. Whether it's a quick sushi fix, a comforting bowl of noodles, or classic Chinese takeout, having a go-to restaurant that delivers consistent quality and convenience is invaluable. In Hopewell Junction, Tokoharu has been a familiar name for many locals seeking their Asian food favorites.
Tokoharu presents itself as a Japanese restaurant, but their menu clearly indicates a broader offering of Asian cuisine, including a substantial selection of Chinese dishes. This dual focus provides a wide array of choices for diverse tastes, making it a versatile option for families or groups with varied preferences. While recent changes in ownership have led to some adjustments in policy and customer experience, Tokoharu continues to serve the Hopewell Junction community. Many long-time patrons have appreciated their food over numerous visits, particularly highlighting the value offered by their lunch specials. Despite any perceived shifts, Tokoharu remains a prominent choice for Asian dining in the area, striving to provide good food with the convenience that busy New Yorkers appreciate.
Tokoharu is conveniently located at 415 NY-376, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533, USA. Route 376 is a main road in Hopewell Junction, making the restaurant easily accessible for residents within Hopewell Junction and from surrounding communities in Dutchess County, such as Fishkill, Wappingers Falls, and East Fishkill. Its location along a state route ensures visibility and straightforward navigation for those traveling by car.
Accessibility to Tokoharu is generally favorable. Situated in a commercial area, there is typically ample parking available, which helps to alleviate the common stress of finding a spot, particularly during peak dining hours or for large takeout orders. This ease of parking is a significant benefit, contributing to a more hassle-free experience whether you're dining in or picking up. For those relying on public transportation, it's advisable to check local Dutchess County Public Transit routes that might service the Route 376 corridor, though personal vehicles remain the most common mode of transport in this area of New York. The restaurant's presence on a well-trafficked road makes it a practical and simple choice for locals seeking their Japanese and Chinese food fix.
Tokoharu offers a comprehensive menu blending Japanese and Chinese culinary traditions, catering to both dine-in and takeout preferences. Here’s a breakdown of their services and offerings:
Dine-in Service: The restaurant provides a space for customers to dine in. While one review described it as having "no other patrons," the presence of a dining area suggests that it is available for sit-down meals, offering a casual setting for enjoying their food.
Extensive Menu of Japanese and Chinese Cuisine: Tokoharu's menu is notably diverse, featuring:
Sushi & Sashimi: A selection of sushi, sashimi, and various rolls (Maki Combo, A la Carte, Vegetable Rolls, Hand Rolls, and specialty rolls like Rainbow Roll, Dragon Roll, Spicy Tuna, Salmon, etc.).
Japanese Kitchen Entrees: This includes popular dishes like Teriyaki (Chicken, Beef, Salmon), Tempura (Shrimp and Vegetable), and Traditional entrees served with soup, salad, and rice. They also offer Hot Pots and Yaki Udon (stir-fried Japanese noodles).
Chinese Appetizers: A wide array including Egg Rolls, Spring Rolls, Fried Wontons, Teriyaki Chicken Sticks, BBQ Spare Ribs, Crab Rangoons, and various Chicken Wings (Fried, Honey, Buffalo, Lemon, Cajun).
Chinese Main Dishes: Classic Chinese offerings like Fried Rice, Lo Mein, Chow Fun/Mai Fun (flat rice noodles/angel hair pasta), Chop Suey, Egg Foo Young, and various protein-based dishes (Pork, Chicken, Beef, Seafood, Vegetable) with options like Broccoli, String Beans, Mixed Vegetables, Garlic Sauce, and more.
Soups & Salads: Options like Miso Soup, Osumashi Soup, House Seafood Soup, Green Salad, Spicy Salad, and Seaweed Salad.
Lunch Specials: Tokoharu is known for offering "lunch specials" which are highlighted as "definitely worth the money." These typically run until a specific time, like 3 PM or 3:30 PM, offering a cost-effective way to enjoy their dishes during lunchtime.
Takeout and Delivery: The restaurant caters heavily to takeout orders, with online ordering available through their website and popular delivery platforms like Seamless, Grubhub, and DoorDash. This makes it highly convenient for customers to enjoy their food at home.
Tokoharu's appeal in the Hopewell Junction area is shaped by several key features and highlights, though some recent changes have impacted customer perceptions:
Broad Asian Menu Selection: One of Tokoharu's most significant strengths is its extensive menu that spans both Japanese and Chinese cuisines. This wide variety ensures that there's something to satisfy almost any craving, from sushi rolls and sashimi to classic fried rice, lo mein, and various chef's specials. This versatility is a major draw for families and groups with diverse preferences.
Value-Oriented Lunch Specials: Historically, their "lunch specials are definitely worth the money," providing a cost-effective way for locals to enjoy a satisfying meal during the daytime. This focus on value has been a key reason for repeat business from patrons.
Convenient Takeout and Delivery Options: The availability of online ordering and partnerships with major delivery services like Seamless, Grubhub, and DoorDash makes Tokoharu highly convenient for takeout. This ease of access for enjoying food at home is a significant benefit for busy individuals and families.
Consistency (Previously): While recent reviews hint at changes, one long-time customer mentioned having "eaten there more than 20 times," suggesting a history of consistent patronage and satisfaction with the food quality prior to recent shifts in ownership or policy.
However, it's important to acknowledge some reported concerns that also factor into the overall customer experience:
Strict Adherence to Lunch Special Timings: A notable point of contention is the strict enforcement of lunch special timings. A customer reported being denied the lunch special price even when ordering just minutes before the 3 PM cutoff, despite being a frequent patron and the restaurant being empty. This strict policy can lead to disappointment for some.
Changes Under New Ownership: Reviews indicate a change in ownership, which has led to shifts in customer experience, including perceived changes in food quality ("food was much better" under old owners) and new charges for items like homemade duck sauce that were previously free. These changes have been disappointing for some loyal customers.
Tokoharu is primarily known for its Lunch Specials, which are available until 3:00 PM or 3:30 PM, Monday through Saturday. These specials offer a cost-effective way to enjoy a variety of their Japanese and Chinese dishes. It's important to note, as a previous customer experienced, that the cutoff time for these specials is strictly enforced.
For any other potential promotions or seasonal offers, it is recommended for locals to:
Check their Official Website: Restaurants often list their current specials, new menu items, or limited-time offers on their official website (e.g., https://www.google.com/search?q=tokoharuny.com or tokoharunewyork.com).
Monitor Online Ordering Platforms: Services like Seamless, Grubhub, and DoorDash sometimes feature exclusive promotions or discounts for orders placed through their platforms.
Inquire Directly: For the most up-to-date information on any unadvertised specials or new menu features, calling Tokoharu directly at (845) 226-2350 is the best approach. They can confirm current offerings and policies.
Given the reported changes in ownership, it's particularly advisable for customers to verify any long-standing promotions or policies to avoid disappointment.

Tokoharu Reviews
The food is good. The lunch specials are definitely worth the money. However the lunch special ends at 3pm. We arrived at 2:50 lunch. They wouldn't honor the special prices even though we were ordering at 2:57 and I showed the waitress the time on my phone. I didn't expect any special treatment, but with No other patrons in the restaurant, I was surprised that they refused to honor the special. We have eaten there more than 20 times. Ended up going to KFC.
May 09 · Mike AltmanChanged owners. Dropped over $100 on takeout and wanted to charge $2 for homemade duck sauce. Old owners never charged, and the food was much better. Very disappointing experience.
May 26 · Michael BHave been here quite a few times and have always been satisfied until tonight. Waited over 2 hours for 3 sushi rolls and 2 chicken/rice combos.Order was wrong, and food was cold/chewy by the time it was “ready”. There was no compensation offered when I told them the order was wrong the girl at the desk tried to convince me that everything was there. I was missing an entire sushi roll and egg rolls. I understand when it’s busy it happens, that’s okay and I don’t mind waiting as long as I’m getting what I paid for. Spent $80 and it was horrible.
February 15 · Brittany MackThis review has come after far too many times of having issues here. I will never be going back. Three separate times I've ordered online only to get there 40 minutes later, and they haven't even started making my order. I literally waited well over an hour once after it was supposed to be ready in 20 minutes. The menu has gotten smaller, and the prices have gone up on top of them, not actually making the order. As a business, you should be ashamed, and I will be disputing the charge with my bank since they refuse to give a refund and expect you to wait for them to make the order even though it was supposedto be done already.
March 30 · Keri ForsterWe get sushi from Tokoharu often, and we've occasionally had some of the Chinese dishes, as well. The sushi is consistently very good and the other dishes have all been good tio very good, as well. We've only done takeout so far.
