At Jinsei Motto, this philosophy comes alive, creating a dining experience that is both personal and unforgettable. Diners frequently praise the freshness of the fish and the intricate flavor profiles achieved by the chefs. Jinsei Motto specializes in delivering an exceptional omakase sushi experience, offering a meticulously curated journey through high-quality Japanese cuisine. While their focus is primarily on this chef's choice menu, they also provide a la carte options and a full beverage program.
- Omakase Tableside Experience: The core offering is a multi-course omakase menu, typically featuring 14 to 19 courses. This allows Chef Sangtae (or the head chef on duty) to showcase a range of fresh, expertly prepared sushi and sashimi, along with complementary non-fish items. A 14-course lunch omakase at $85 (including supplemental premium add-ons) has been noted, while a full omakase has been priced around $175 (excluding gratuity and beverages).
- A La Carte Menu: Beyond the omakase, Jinsei Motto offers a robust à la carte menu with various starters, nigiri, and maki rolls. Popular choices include:
- Starters: Crab Poppers, Crispy Tuna Bites, Bang Bang Lion's Mane (tempura mushroom), Seaweed Salad (savory, darker seaweed), Chicken Karaage, Tako Yaki Fritters, and Edamame.
- Nigiri (1pc): Selections like Hamachi (yellowtail), Sake (salmon), Hirame (flounder), Otoro (fatty tuna), Wagyu, Uni (sea urchin), and Unagi (freshwater eel).
- Maki Rolls: Popular options like Spicy Bluefin Tuna, Hamachi Serrano, Hidden Dragon (tempura shrimp, eel), and their unique California King (red crab).
- Setto (Nigiri Sets): Various curated nigiri sets, such as the Classic Setto (8pc) and Tokushu (12pc, including bluefin and uni).

- Cocktails: Creative cocktails that complement the Japanese cuisine.
- Non-Alcoholic Options: Including sparkling juice and Yuzu juice.
- Intimate Seating: The restaurant offers a limited seating arrangement, often with a sushi counter for direct chef interaction, and tables in the back for a slightly more private experience.

Jinsei Motto stands out in Chicago's competitive dining scene with several distinctive features that captivate locals in Illinois:
- Exceptional Omakase Quality: The primary highlight is the "excellent" omakase tableside experience. Diners consistently praise the "incredible" quality of the food and the "pure perfection" of the flavor profiles achieved by Chef Sangtae. The fish is often described as "incredibly fresh" and "melted in your mouth."
- Unique Flavor Combinations & Innovation: The chefs are celebrated for their creative toppings and innovative approaches that sometimes "overpower the fish" (a subjective take, but indicative of bold flavors) while still delivering "delicious" results. Dishes like the "BamBam Lions Mane" and "crab poppers" are noted for their originality and taste.
- Standout Non-Sushi Dishes: Beyond the sushi, specific courses like the "chawanmushi" are lauded as "the best I had in terms of texture and flavor," with "substantial bites of perfectly cooked crab and squid." The "misoyaki" is also highlighted as "out of this world," even favorably compared to "Nobu’s black miso cod."
- Lively and Fun Ambiance: The atmosphere is described as "fun with murals and good people watching," and the bar area is noted for being "full and looked lively." This blends a sophisticated dining experience with a social and energetic vibe.
- Knowledgeable and Friendly Staff: Servers are consistently described as "knowledgeable and friendly," enhancing the overall dining experience with great recommendations and attentive service.
- Sake Flight & Robust Beverage Program: The "sake flight is a must!" according to reviews, highlighting a strong beverage program that includes a wide selection of sake, wines, beers, and creative cocktails, perfectly complementing the Japanese cuisine.
- Intimate Setting with Bar/Table Options: While the total seating is limited (contributing to intimacy), guests can choose between the lively bar scene or a "table in the back" for a calmer experience, catering to different preferences.
- Michelin Guide Recognition: Jinsei Motto is recognized by the Michelin Guide, affirming its status as a top-tier culinary destination known for its high-quality sushi and innovative techniques, including pioneering dry-aging methods.
As a high-end omakase-focused sushi restaurant recognized by the Michelin Guide, Jinsei Motto typically does not offer conventional discounts or frequent "promotions" in the way a casual eatery might. Their value proposition is built on the premium quality of ingredients, the artistry of their chefs, and the exclusive dining experience.
However, there are still aspects that might be considered "special offers" or unique opportunities for locals in Illinois to consider when planning a visit:
- Lunch Omakase Value: While dinner omakase is a significant investment, Jinsei Motto has offered a "14-course lunch omakase for $85," which is noted by customers as an "incredible deal" and "affordable" for the quality received. This provides a more accessible entry point to their premium omakase experience during the day.
- Curated Beverage Pairings: While an additional cost, their "sake flight" and other beverage pairings are expertly curated to enhance the omakase meal. These are special offerings that elevate the culinary journey.
- Seasonal Menu Evolution: The omakase menu changes based on the freshest seasonal ingredients. This ensures a unique experience with each visit, making repeat visits exciting as there are always new flavors and preparations to discover.
- Special Events: As part of the vibrant Chicago dining scene, Jinsei Motto has been known to host or participate in special events, such as "Suntory & Sushi Party" events, which might feature unique menus or entertainment. Keeping an eye on their social media or website for such announcements is recommended.

Omakase tableside was excellent. Music was a little loud, but ambiance was fun with murals and good people watching. A table in the back was a must to avid the bar, front scene. The bar was full and looked lively. Sake flight is a must!We had a few different servers throughout our dinner. All were knowledgeable and friendly.A bit expensive but tasty fish!
Apr 19, 2025 · Alexis RosaI’m gonna start off by saying I would’ve given this restaurant 5 stars except for one horrible piece of sushi that was on the Omakase.Specifically, it was their scallop it was described as having Uni underneath it.The scallop was I think maybe piece number 10 out of 14 - before that bite everything was really good. The BamBam lions, mane, the crab poppers, the fresh crab California roll. And also each of the Omakase pieces were great until the scallop !But as soon as both of us ate that scallop piece we wanted to gag I think maybe the Uni had gone bad something - it tasted like rancid, bad fish like that smell underneath a dirty beach pier of like old fish. And I think most people eating it would just chalk this up to that’s how it’s supposed to taste but there’s no way! We have both had uni plenty before. That ruined the entire experience for me. We talked about it for the rest of the night.if we had not had that one piece, this would’ve easily been a full five star experience and I would’ve gone back to them for sure
Feb 15, 2025 · N SThis place is amazing. Nick is the best server. I could eat 25 Unitoro and not feel guilty about it. I also love their sampler option for when you don’t know what to get. Also gotta love the shots of Malort!!For cocktail, I love the baby shark: 12/10 I love the little peppery kick to it. Thank you guys!
