What feels to be a hidden gem. We went late in the evening and it was pretty empty, no reservations needed. Seated at the bar, we had a perfect view of the grill master meticulously tending to each skewer. Most pieces were unfortunately cooked well done and lacking a juiciness, maybe it could benefit from hotter coals. Our favorite pieces were the pork belly and grilled smelt. The service was friendly and quick. The ambiance had a coziness like stepping into a local izakaya on the streets of Japan. - Jeff Tong

Features / Highlights

Koshiji Japanese BBQ & Grill in Torrance is renowned for several distinct features that make it a beloved spot for authentic Japanese dining in Southern California.

  • Authentic Izakaya Ambiance: A key highlight is the restaurant's "coziness like stepping into a local izakaya on the streets of Japan." This genuine atmosphere, complete with traditional Japanese decor, transports diners and enhances the overall experience, making it feel like a true escape from the ordinary.

  • High-Quality Yakitori Selection: Koshiji is praised for its "high quality ingredients" for skewers, with a wide array of options beyond just chicken. Favorites include the "pork belly," "grilled smelt," "beef tongue," and various chicken items, all contributing to a rich and satisfying grilled experience.

Promotions or Special Offers

While Koshiji primarily focuses on delivering an authentic and high-quality Izakaya experience, there are certain aspects and potential offerings that can be considered beneficial for locals looking for value or specific dining experiences.

  • Yakitori Combo Sets: As a common practice in Izakayas, Koshiji likely offers value-driven combo sets, such as a "yakitori combo" that includes a selection of skewers along with rice, soup, salad, and pickles. This provides a complete meal at a set price, which can be more economical than ordering individual skewers.

  • Lunch Specials (Coming Soon / Past Offerings): While currently closed for lunch, Koshiji's website mentions "Lunch Coming Soon" and historical data indicates they previously offered lunch specials, such as the yakitori set with six skewers, soup, salad, and pickles. It's advisable for locals to check their current status on lunch service as it could provide a great midday value.

  • Happy Hour (Potential): Given it's an Izakaya known for "Yakitori and beer," it's common for such establishments to have a happy hour for drinks and select appetizers/skewers. While not explicitly detailed in recent reviews, it's worth inquiring about upon arrival or checking their online presence for "Yakitori Ala Carte & Happy Hour" as mentioned on their website.

  • Catering Service: For larger gatherings or events, Koshiji offers a catering service, including "Obento (Take Out Only)" and "Catering Service." This can be a convenient and cost-effective way to enjoy their authentic flavors for group events outside the restaurant.
