The area around the restaurant is bustling, contributing to a lively urban dining experience.
SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa focuses on a refined and streamlined sushi dining experience based on Chef Nozawa's traditional philosophy:
- Dine-In Service: Enjoy the clean, minimalist ambiance designed to put the focus squarely on the sushi. The rice is served warm and loosely packed, as per Nozawa's specific style, for optimal flavor and texture.
- "Trust Me" Set Menus: The signature offering, designed to simplify the ordering process and deliver the chef's recommended progression of sushi. These multi-course menus typically include:
- Trust Me: A well-rounded selection often featuring organic edamame, tuna sashimi, albacore, salmon, yellowtail, sea bream sushi, and various cut and hand rolls (e.g., Fish Cut Roll, Blue and Dungeness Crab Cut Roll).
- The Nozawa Trust Me: A more expansive option, similar to what Chef Nozawa served his regulars at his original Studio City restaurant, often including additional pieces of high-quality nigiri and sashimi (like Bluefin Otoro).
- Trust Me Lite: A lighter version of the set menu, perfect for smaller appetites or a quicker meal.
- Don't Think. Just Eat. Trust Me: The most comprehensive omakase-style menu, offering a full experience with sashimi, multiple nigiri pieces, and hand rolls.
- A La Carte Options (Limited): While the set menus are highly recommended, certain items like individual nigiri pieces (Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, Albacore, Uni, Toro, etc.), sashimi, and hand rolls (Blue Crab, Lobster, Spicy Tuna, Yellowtail, Salmon, Toro) can be ordered separately to supplement the Trust Me options or for those with very specific preferences.
- Hand Rolls Emphasis: Hand rolls are a particular highlight, often cited as a favorite by customers. They are prepared to be eaten immediately to ensure the nori (seaweed) remains crisp.
- Beverage Selection: A concise selection of Japanese and other beverages, including Sapporo beer (Light, Premium, Reserve), various sakes (Nozawa Super Dry, Nigori, Hakkaisan), wine (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay), and non-alcoholic options like Iced Green Tea and sodas.
- Takeout Options: For convenience, SUGARFISH offers "To-Go Trust Me" sets and other individual items for pickup or delivery through platforms like ChowNow.
SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa stands out in the Los Angeles sushi scene due to several distinct features:
- Unwavering Commitment to Quality: The core philosophy revolves around using the "highest quality sushi" and "hand-selected fish" sourced meticulously. This commitment extends to their specially prepared warm, loosely-packed rice and house-made soy and ponzu sauces.
- The "Trust Me" Concept: This unique approach simplifies ordering and ensures diners experience a curated progression of the freshest and best items of the day, reflecting the chef's expertise. It's praised for being a "good deal" for the quality.
- Exceptional Hand Rolls: Customers consistently highlight the hand rolls as a favorite, noting their perfect balance of fresh ingredients and crisp nori.
- Authentic Traditional Style: SUGARFISH adheres to traditional Tokyo-style sushi, meaning you won't find elaborate "American style" rolls with heavy sauces or exotic ingredients. The focus is on the pure flavor of the fish.
- Consistent Experience Across Locations: As part of a larger, well-established group with multiple locations in LA, SUGARFISH maintains a high level of consistency in quality and service across all its restaurants.
- Great Value for Quality: Despite the premium ingredients, customers often find the "Trust Me" menus to be "not too costly" and an excellent value for the caliber of sushi received.
- Efficient Service: Even during busy periods, the service is generally efficient, allowing for a smooth dining experience.
SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa operates on a philosophy of consistent quality and value through its core "Trust Me" set menus, rather than frequent, fluctuating promotions. The "Trust Me" menus themselves are designed to be the "good deal" as noted by customers, offering a curated, high-quality sushi experience at a fixed price point.
While they don't typically run traditional "happy hour" or percentage-off deals, their consistent pricing for premium ingredients is a continuous draw. The efficiency of their service, especially during lunch hours when it's "not too much at this time" and you can "sit down super quickly," can also be considered a form of value, saving customers time. The focus here is on the inherent value of the fresh, expertly prepared sushi itself, which is their core "special offer" to the discerning sushi eater. Any daily specials would typically involve unique fish selections available only on that particular day, rather than price reductions.

SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa Reviews
Got the nozawa set menu - I enjoyed it! The hand rolls were definitely my favorite. It was nice to not have to think about what to order. One thing that surprised me was that they only have sushi on the menu (no appetizers), and the selection is not huge (no tamago!!!). I'm not sure what other places in downtown LA cost, but $39 for the set felt like a good deal to me!
Mar 16, 2025 · AliciaアリシャDefinitely worth a try, they have specific set menus that honestly work very well! I would approve and this is coming from a person that has had a lot of sushi! It’s something different and it isn’t too costly either, this might be one of the best sushi places in the country. Came here on a whim and it was definitely delicious!!
Oct 04, 2024 · ADidn't give full points for the service because I remember raising my hand for water for more than once and for a while too. Same thing happened when asking for the bill and when asking for the bill to be taken. Not sure if it was because the place was packed (also the reason why my atmosphere is at 4 star, nice interiors and all but a little noisy and tables are so close to each other, at least for me) but I just could not give a 5 star for that kind of experience. For $39++ for the Nozawa Trust Me, it was truly worth it. I hardly eat tuna and always go for salmon when in other sushi restaurants but for Sugarfish, or at least my taste buds, their tuna is always superior. I ordered salmon sashimi on top of our set to compare further as seen in the photos I attached. So if you're not ordering a set, at least order their tuna sashimi and chutoro sushi. The blue and dungeness crab roll was great too.
Dec 15, 2023 · Syril TanOrdered carry-out from Sugarfish since I heard good things about the restaurant. Prices were reasonable and quality matched the prices. The packaging was really well done and the set box was a perfect way to get variety. I would definitely order from them again.
Feb 16, 2024 · wook kim- This is a real sushi place so no spicy Mayo or eel sauce in sight.- The to-go experience was purely aesthetics. It was good! Literally the same thing, quality is great and it was fresh. Only thing that made me dock points was the server didn’t let us sit outside in the bench area even though NO ONE was in the restaurant so clearly there’s no need for the waiting area so we thought that was just dumb bc we were only gonna take like 15 minutes to eat. He literally made us go sit in this dingy sitting area that was wet and had flies everywhere bc of the plants so it made it unpleasant. It was just unnecessary to not let us sit in the front for a little bit when the place was empty.- I’m still down to try other locations!
