Sushi Bar Chicago specializes in a highly exclusive and personalized omakase dining experience:
-
Omakase Inspired Tasting Menu: The core offering is a meticulously curated 17-course omakase menu, featuring 16 pieces of Chef's choice nigiri plus one dessert bite. This rotating menu highlights seasonal and exotic ingredients from both land and sea, prepared skillfully right in front of the guests.
-
Intimate Counter Seating: The experience unfolds around a 12-seat counter, allowing for direct interaction with the sushi chefs. This intimate setting fosters a sense of personal connection and allows guests to witness the culinary artistry up close.
-
Reservations Required: Due to the exclusive nature and limited seating, booking a reservation is essential. Guests are invited to join 30 minutes prior to their reservation time for a pre-dinner experience, including a complimentary welcome cocktail and canapé service.
-
Beverages and A La Carte Extras: While the omakase is the main event, beverages and extra bites are available a la carte. They offer customizable beverage pairings for an additional fee.
-
Dietary Accommodations: The restaurant states that it can accommodate gluten, dairy, and shellfish restrictions. However, they politely decline all mushroom and fish allergies/aversions and do not have any vegetarian options available, due to the specific nature of their omakase menu.
-
Omakase at Home Experience: For those seeking to bring the high-end experience to their private space, Sushi Bar Chicago offers an "Omakase at Home" service. This includes a team of sushi chefs, a curated omakase-inspired tasting menu, optional drink pairings, and welcome/farewell cocktails. There is a food and beverage minimum for off-site events.
-
No Dress Code: The restaurant does not enforce a strict dress code, encouraging guests to wear whatever they are comfortable dining in.
Sushi Bar Chicago stands out with several exceptional features that contribute to its acclaimed omakase experience:
-
"Out of This World" Freshness: The most consistently praised highlight is the unparalleled freshness of the fish and other ingredients, including premium Wagyu. Patrons note that "every bite" brings incredible flavors, often describing it as "out of this world."
-
Highly Personable & Engaging Chefs: The sushi chefs (including Marcos, as mentioned in a review) are a key part of the experience. They are described as "incredibly nice," "super personable," and "attentive," actively walking guests through each bite, answering questions, and making everyone "feel welcome and at home."
-
Intimate Speakeasy Atmosphere: The setting, nestled within Lady May, creates a unique "Omakase speakeasy" vibe. The 12-seat counter allows for a direct and immersive interaction with the culinary artisans, enhancing the sense of exclusivity and personalization.
-
Interpretive New Wave Nigiri: Sushi Bar Chicago offers "interpretive new takes on traditional nigiri," blending classic techniques with delightful surprises and "exquisite delicacies from both land and sea." This innovative approach provides a fresh perspective on beloved classics.
-
Accommodation for Allergies/Preferences: The team is highly accommodating for specified dietary needs like nut allergies, gluten, dairy, and shellfish restrictions. They go above and beyond, even crafting custom mocktails for non-drinkers.
-
Complimentary Welcome Experience: Guests are invited to arrive 30 minutes early for a complimentary welcome cocktail and canapé service, setting a luxurious tone for the evening even before the omakase begins.
-
Educational Aspect: Chefs are keen to share their craft, even offering samples of fresh wasabi before it's incorporated into a dish, adding an educational and interactive layer to the dining.
Given the high-end, exclusive nature of Sushi Bar Chicago's omakase experience, their "promotions" are more about value-added services and unique offerings rather than traditional discounts. The fixed price of the omakase ensures a consistent premium experience.
-
Pre-Dinner Welcome Experience: A significant "special offer" is the complimentary welcome cocktail and canapé service provided to guests who arrive 30 minutes before their reservation. This adds considerable value and sets a luxurious tone.
-
Optional Beverage Pairings: While an additional cost, the availability of carefully curated sake and wine pairings enhances the overall culinary journey, offering an integrated experience for those who choose it.
-
Omakase at Home: This unique service allows for a high-end, private omakase experience at a client's home or chosen venue. While it comes with a significant food and beverage minimum, it offers an exclusive, bespoke catering solution for special events.
-
Seasonal Menu Changes: The omakase menu is constantly rotating with "seasonal and exotic ingredients," ensuring that repeat customers always have a fresh and novel experience, effectively a new "offer" each time they visit.

Sushi Bar Chicago Reviews
I wish I could give 6 stars out because this place is AMAZING. The chefs are incredibly nice and walk you through each bite. They were both super personable and were willing to answer all of our questions. All of the fish (and wagu!) were so so fresh and had out of this world flavors. My only regret is not savoring each bite a little bit more! My husband had a nut allergy, which we told them about beforehand and they were very accommodating. We also don't drink alcohol so during the bartender made us a mocktail! Outstanding service and outstanding food from beginning to end.
May 27, 2024 · Jessica AliThe food, service, and atmosphere was amazing. This has been one of the best omakase experiences I have had! Marcos (our sushi chef) was attentive, interacting with everyone, and made everyonefeel welcome and at home. He even let us have a bit of fresh wasabi so that we could sample it before it was incorporated into a dish. If you are on the fence about this restaurant, get off the fence, and book that reservation as this restaurant is well worth it!
Jul 11, 2024 · Elijah VueAmazing experience! Celebrated wife’s 40th, loved the intimate setting, cocktails, sake and beer was great, truly enjoyed the non traditional approach to their menu, the bites were incredible. All 3 chefs had applied their creativity in creating each course and it was fun.I’d go back again when I recover from paying for this meal 😀
Apr 15, 2024 · Vishal ShahWell worth every penny. If you have any reservations about visiting this placed based on its number of reviews (20 at the time of my posting this), please dispel those. If I could give this Omakase Experience a rating higher than 5 ⭐️’s I would. With some of the most interesting, different, and inventive flavor combinations & textural differences I’ve ever had (not just in a nigiri 🍣 but ever). Me & my wife were nothing short of completely blown away by everything.Everyone knows the 5 tastes that we can detect (𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁, 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆, 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿, 𝗕𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, & 𝗨𝗺𝗮𝗺𝗶). Most Omakase Experiences focus on the Salty, Sour, & Umami notes the heaviest. Sushi | Bar gives you the full experience with some amazing Sweet notes as well as some soft Bitter notes on some of the rolls to accentuate the other core flavors.
Mar 14, 2024 · Lathier Brown, Jr.Incredible experience. I will warn you all, it’s a hefty price tag. But, there is just nothing like it. The staff and chefs know you by name, learn your likes and dislikes and really create an intimate experience. Though this experience is meant to be entertaining, Omasake is a serious craft, that requires keen attention to detail and years of experience. Each sushi piece was nothing short of art work and with absolutely zero room for error. Each piece of protein and many of the ingredients are flown in overnight from Japan, New Zealand, etc. Truly the best of the best.
