Katana Japanese Restaurant

920 71st St, Miami Beach, FL 33141, USA

4.0
Katana is the best sushi in South Florida. Maybe in Florida overall. If you don’t agree, please don’t come here! I have been eating here for over 20 years. The price is very fair for the quality of the fish. You can spend $15 per person or $100 per person, it’s all based on your appetite and food choices.Yes, you will need to wait. There are no reservations. If you are at the restaurant by 5pm, you can put yourself on the list when they put it outside. If you are on that list T 5pm, you will be sat when they open at 6pm. If you arrive at 6pm, and put your name on the list, you will probably be sat at 7-7:30pm. Anytime after that is based on how busy they are. There have been nights where I have been denied a seat because the list went too long and they close at 12am. This doesn’t mean you can show up at 11pm and get sat. There is an awesome bar, Bobs Your Uncle, two doors down. Go in there and have a cocktail or two. Have some fries if you’re starving. Katana is worth the wait if you actually love sushi. If you love RAW fish. If you want shrimp tempura (which they sell), just go somewhere else. This place is for people who understand sushi on a deeper level. Also, if you have a large group, this place is not a good choice. Best for parties of 2-4 people. - Kristeen Pawly

However, locals have perfected the art of making the wait part of the fun. • Unique Conveyor Belt (Kaiten Zushi) Dining: Katana is famous for its "little boats came around on the water trail," where sushi, sashimi, and other small plates float by. Diners simply take their favorites directly from the moving belt, offering an interactive and visually engaging dining experience.
  • A La Carte Ordering: While the conveyor belt is a highlight, guests can also order specific items from a traditional menu, including a wide range of sushi, sashimi, appetizers, and larger cooked dishes.
  • Emphasis on Raw Fish: Katana is a haven for those who "love RAW fish." While some cooked options like shrimp tempura are available, the core focus is on the freshest, highest-quality raw fish, prepared with expertise.
  • Extensive Sushi & Sashimi Selection: The menu features classic nigiri (e.g., Tuna, Salmon, Hamachi) and a vast array of rolls, ranging from basic options like California Roll and Spicy Tuna to various colored plates (Green, Red, Blue, Gold, Black, Dark Plate) signifying different prices and specialty items. Innovative rolls are also present.
  • Appetizers & Small Plates: Offerings include Pork Gyoza, Edamame, Spicy Honey Shrimp Pops, Tuna Tartar, Grilled Octopus, and the "eye-openingly delicious" appetizer with salmon sashimi and yuzu juice. Crispy Rice (like Tuna on Crispy Rice) is a sensational favorite.
  • Noodles & Soups: Including various Udon dishes (Plain, Steamed Chicken, Shrimp Tempura) and Ramen Soup.
  • Donburi (Rice Bowls): Chicken Teriyaki Don and other rice bowl options are available.
  • Desserts: "Cheese cake temporas awesome" and other sweet treats like Banana Tempura and Ice Cream Tempura are offered.
  • Beverage Selection: A selection of beers (Sapporo, Pilsen), sake (House, Sparkling, Ginjo, Nigori), cocktails (Chicha Spritz, Tokyo Mojito, Sangrias), wines, and non-alcoholic beverages are available.

  • "Best Sushi in South Florida (Maybe in Florida overall)": This is a bold claim from a long-time local, speaking volumes about the consistent and exceptional quality of the sushi and fish.

  • Unique Conveyor Belt Dining Experience: The "little boats came around on the water trail" create an "awesome experience" that is both practical and entertaining, setting Katana apart from conventional sushi restaurants.

Promotions or Special Offers

Katana Japanese Restaurant, being a highly sought-after destination known for its quality and unique experience, doesn't typically rely on conventional "promotions" or "special offers" in the way many other restaurants do. Their consistent value lies in the exceptional quality of their food at a "very fair price," as highlighted by long-time customers.

  • Value-Driven Pricing: While not a promotional "deal," the pricing structure allows for flexibility. As one reviewer noted, "You can spend $15 per person or $100 per person, it’s all based on your appetite and food choices." This means diners control their spend, making it accessible for various budgets without compromising on the quality of the fresh fish.
  • "Worth the Wait" Experience: The "wait" itself is part of the Katana experience, and the consistent reviews confirm that the quality of the food and service makes it "worth the wait." This "value" is inherent in the dining journey, not a discount on the bill.
  • Unique Dining Concept: The "little boats" carrying sushi, while an operational feature, also serve as a unique draw that enhances the perceived value of the meal. It's an experience in itself that few other places offer.

Because Katana maintains such high demand and a no-reservation policy, they generally don't need to offer typical discounts to attract customers. Their "special offer" is the consistent delivery of arguably the best, freshest sushi in South Florida at a price point that many find incredibly reasonable for the quality. For specific current offerings, it's always best to check their official website or inquire directly, though major price-cutting promotions are rare for an establishment of its caliber and popularity.
